the 500 dollar Totem speakers me and @famish99 dialed in in another room sounded way better, on much more pedestrian electronics. Only thing I can say about the grand utopia was they sounded "big", but I imagine you could get that from some cheap PA speakers
the room was also to small for them I think, and they weren't well placed either, but they also weigh like 600 lbs each, so I can see why they wouldn't want to move them around a whole lot
I've heard a few flavors of Sopras and a Kanta. Didn't like any of them. I'm surprised their headphones are any good considering that their speakers are voiced for people with hearing damage.
You would think now that Focal and Naim are partnered that they would start to work on some synergy between their components, but hard to imagine a worse match as their product lines stand now. Been noticing a decent amount of used/open box focals at my local focal retailer... Any of their speakers people like?
There was another focal, the Kanta n3, in the same room with the Totems we did all the demoing with, we didn't like them either. only listened for like one song and switched back. lol I agree @AdvanTech I dunno how they're headphones are so good when it seems their speakers aren't ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
FWIW, I liked a pair of Sopra No.3 when I was auditioning speakers last year. They were driven with a semi-modest pair of Rowland class D amps. I thought they were detailed without being peaky and had good soundstage and bass.
Most on this thread would seem to disagree, but I liked them.
another thing to keep in mind is that positioning and setup in general with speakers has such a huge impact on sound, and you can't always count on dealers to do that optimally, even if you'd they should be since its their job to sell them
I'd say the Naim Statement was more than enough amplification, but the complete lack of any imaging was most likely due to its size relative to the room. I'd say Khorns do a better job of sounding massive than the Grand Utopias too while fitting into more normal sized spaces.
