The only times those make sense are in meet demo settings where you have a queue forming up behind you haha. This is why I'm not a big meets guy-- small ones between friends where you can just temporarily yoink something off to the side are much more useful.

Gear meets are definitely one of those things where you probably don’t have more than a few minutes. But they’re also pretty compromised in other ways, like noise. I do remember some pretty powerful experiences at RMAF a few years back, so I’ll acknowledge a short time might be enough for a strong impression. Just feel like if you have the time to give it a few hours or days, I appreciate you.

Fully agreed that if the gear's at home then due diligence precludes actually taking time with the silly thing and using it as if it were an actual part of one's system! Just that superlative stuff isn't always easy to acquire so demos are the only recourse for some. agreed on noise, even quiet cafes can make my home (perpetual construction, people drinking right outside my window) seem tranquil.

if people are drinking right outside your (home) window, would be best to ask @YMO to stop. or go elsewhere.

Impression burn in. I find they need about 50 hours, though some claim you need to give them 150 hours for them to really settle in.

Depends, if I've just listened to some reference I know well and then do a 15 minute session on something random I'll know how it sounds. Otherwise not really, but it's fun. 95% of what I read goes into the unconfirmed pile and I decide what or who gets the OK. Still, it's entertaining reading how noobs rave about their latest toy to justify the purchase. Same as I did, GOD that HD700...

I can scare people away if that helps. For gear impressions, mood makes a big difference.

I know if something will be wrong for me on a known chain within the first couple of minutes tops. I think the longer you're in the hobby and the more set in your ways you are, you can reject headphones much faster. I know @purr1n will pull shit off almost immediately if he doesn't like it.

Depends on the gear and type of review you’re writing. It sometimes only takes me a few minutes with a pair of problematic headphones. But to write a full review I force myself to listen for other things other than those problems and spend more time with it. I didn’t need anymore than a minute with the HD8XX to write the brief review I wrote.

I agree that on a chain you know intimately, bad gear or poorly synergizing gear in particular is easier to rule out. Good gear I generally need more time with to evaluate WHY it's good, even if I've already had the emotional reaction and can tell it's good.
