B329 is a nice valve and in the ballpark of what you're looking for and at the top of my 12AU7 list. The next best would be the CV4003, not as lush as mullard but more open. Sylvania 5814A gold brand may be fit the bill. I also have a soft spot for the CBS-Hytron 5814A D getter, far from lush but exquisitely linear.

TBH, Something's off if a Mullard can't do midrange. Anyways, you might wanna try a 'Box plate' Mullard, Seimens triple mica or a Telefunken as well.

Thanks, everybody! For the Siemens, are we talking nickel plate ECC82? And it's not that the Mullards lack a liquid midrange; it's the air and clarity in staging and space of the RCA's I wish the Mullards had.

I got both short box and long plate Siemens and they both have crystal clear highs without the grain of clear tops and really linear bass. Maybe the bass is a touch lighter than Mullard, but more weight for sure than clear top.

Definitely interested in the B329 rec though...

I second @famish99 on this one. For the 12a_7 family, I've preferred the good german tubes.
