Low impedance in speakers is prized? High sensitivity sure.

Fair. In my case A/Bing identical headphone drivers aside from impedance, the lower impedance ones are up to 10dB more efficient on all of my amps at any given volume control setting than the high impedance ones - so the two are more intertwined than often the case with speakers, likely due to differences in amplification needs.

The challenge with high sensitivity in a speaker of course is that you generally have to choose either large drivers/cabinet or reduced low frequency extension. Not sure if headphones suffer from similar tradeoffs?

Not in my experience thankfully. That'd be a hard call to make in terms of tradeoffs

One caveat: may need attenuation when running them out of "nice" amps lest ears get blown to Kingdom Come: Deliverance,

@pure5152 I'd love to have one and mod it a bit, but I'm not sure which of them have the easiest access to the back of the driver. Not keen on drilling or cutting. Would love some advice on that front!

diyearphonelabs says they sell genuine Grado drivers. They sell entire Grado clone kits too. Not recommending the clones. But they also sell Grado-inspired enclosure with easy cup grill removal lids.
