had other ideas. SSD S.M.A.R.T. status 3E detected during boot POST. Immediately run a full backup to NAS. Then have a new SSD shipped with appropriate USB adapter. Tried to be too clever and use PCIe instead of SATA. Forgot Win7 wouldn't have PCIe drivers installed.
So had another SSD shipped, this time a Samsung evo 860 SATA version instead of evo 970 PCIe. Ran data migration tool and am now in process of re-installing some licenses that did not migrate properly. Just in time to attend an AES PNW concurrent meeting on designing spatial audio for video games, possibly three hour meeting.
I was very fortunate. SMART provided warning of imminent failure due to error 204, Bad Block Full Flag. Acronis full backup to NAS for 220 GB took about 3 hrs. Data migration took about 21 minutes to new drive. Biggest delays were shipping and me attempting to be too clever. 2 perfectly fine days shot to hell with no lab computer.
