Anecdotally, yes. My Schitt Saga+ changes my soundstage perception with the tube buffer enabled. It widens to my broken ears.

@Cryptowolf @SoupRKnowva Then I’m not imagining stuff. Spent enough time with my passive and Freya over past year to notice differences.

I haven't compared any active pres, but just comparing different passive ones, goldpoint, icon AVC, and then compared to built in digital volume control, they all sound different to me.

@SoupRKnowva I wonder how much has to do with matching resistance, etc. in passives. I run Khozmo passives. Love them.

@Cryptowolf I've never had anything but an integrated and OG Freya, but Khozmo works better in my system than anything I've tried.

I found the goldpoint to be a noticeable step down from the built in volume control of the wavedream. the icOn4 AVC was actually very close, different in some ways but overall at a similar level. Ive not heard a Khozmo though

I notice very subtle differences between my Goldpoint, Soekris Digital and the MHA100 depending on usage and gain management. If I stay in the 'sweet spot' (ie: reducing impact of cable capacitance for the GoldPoint, minimal digital attenuation for Soekris, and MHA100 topping out at 60% for max volume) they are all excellent.

"Gain Management" is using the trim pots on my monitors to put the upstream attenuator in its comfort zone.
