My father-in-law has a sizable collection, curiously of what he calls "celtic" coins (?) and Thai coin/paper,, and I assume also "normal" stuff. Now that his dementia is advancing, it has fallen on me to help him sell if off...
You might be on to something (going local), I just assumed the way to do this was online on whatever the Ebay site is for coins. That, and I don't really want to put that much effort into it, like going personal/local ;)
My wife's a fine art appraiser but doesn't have any expertise in coins. She used to work at an auction house and knows a nice guy who could give you some advice. I'll PM you with the details.
Her general advice is that selling privately online can involve risks, especially with potentially valuable coins. Buyers might falsely claim the coins are fake, for instance, and you might not be able to charge as much, if the coins are valuable, because online shoppers may not be serious collectors.
Other options are to consign with a coin shop or to sell via auction house. The benefits of doing so are that both have relationships with dedicated collectors whom they contact when items come up for sale. These collectors are prepared to pay top dollar. You’ll have to pay a fee – often a % of the sale (as with online sale) – but you might secure a higher sale price this way.
