Yeah, that’s how Carmax is. I’m looking at places like that but I may buy a used car from a local dealer if they can do it without the games. I will walk out on that shit.
Don't know if it's all dealerships, but the last two times I bought a car I got quotes online and only talked to dealers that sent competitive offers. Both places the online sales were completely separate from the floor sales.
I used to prep for buying cars in Cali...get payment pre-arranged so I had a blank check with an uppr limit, all my pricing research so I knew the dealer holdback, incentives etc. I would arrive with a spreadsheet with my price, sit the salesperson down and explain I would walk away the instant they started playing games.
It can be quite fun having the manager come running out as you walk off. I always got what I wanted within a weekend. I guess once you've walked away a time or two, they can see you mean it in your face.
I don't buy new cars anymore, only low mileage used cars, too much depreciation otherwise (but maybe not in the current chip situation?). Agree with all stated above, go in with max amt you are willing to pay after looking online first. "Talking to the manager" is a VERY old ploy.
I do know the ins and outs of researching and buying a car. I also buy used cars but lately it seems hard to find any decent ones that I’m interested in from individual sellers so at the moment I’m looking at dealerships.
I worked for a company that provided turnkey computer systems for them and we had to know everything about the process inside and out. We occasionally had salesmen calling and wanting us to change the forms so that they could more easily rip people off.
