When I lived in TX, I was in love with I&O.. very impactful. SS wasn't very good when ate in CA. But after moving to PA, SS here was very different from what I ate in other states. More balanced than I&O from the memory. I heard good things about FG but haven't tried yet.

I don't think ive ever had shake shack, but to me in and out is a decent _cheap_ burger, but not in the same league as something like five guys

I&O is consistent and a value. Both SS and FG are delicious, but too spendy for me to think of them as fast food. I can bring my kids to I&O. But FG and SS are expensive for the whole family... If someone else were paying, it would be a toss up between the SS and FG; I probably prefer FG. But when I've been away from California too long, I&O is a crave. BTW, FG fries are great.

like comparing OB speakers to highend bookshelf speakers to vintage monkey coffin speakers. Preferences and synergies.

Different ones for different moods but usually whichever one is closer / has a shorter line. And yes, Shake Shack isn't that great out here - much better in other regions.

At both I&O and FG I will get no or minimal season salt on the patties though - IMO tastes much better that way unless you're drinking soda in which case you need it to cut through the overly sweetened soda.

5 Guys all the way but mainly because a burger is incomplete without a side of great fries. If you've ever had the pleasure of Thrashers fries on the Ocean City MD boardwalk then you'll know where 5G got its fry recipe. Salt and malt only,no ketchup or Mayo to detract from that great peanut oil double fried tater flavor and crunch.

FG>SS but not by a big margin. I still prefer my own burger I make in my home over any burger from a restaurant except Texas Road House ones.

@Pogo - For whatever reason in n out fries are the worst I’ve ever had. In theory they should be the best since they cut them fresh but I think there’s a lot they don’t do for efficiency reasons

Had I&O once and loved it but I was starving. Never had Shake Shack. First time 5 Guys was after hiking Grand Canyon so I was starving. Mind Blown. Then 5 Guys came to my town and I’ve been there twice in 4 years. Ok but expensive. Test inconclusive due to starving variable and low sample size.

I&O fries are only good when hot & terrible once they’ve cooled. SS burgers are good but heavier to the point where I want to purge myself if I eat too much of it. Don’t have that problem with I&O

I&O is the Magni 3+ of burgers. That's a compliment

Given those three Five Guys, but overpriced. In-and-Out is over hyped. Cannot comment on Shake Shack, but I love me some Culver's.
