I still think it was true that, when I first tried it, it was awful. But the whole thing was skewed until I loaded the latest (available to me) Linux kernel.
Now I'm happy to use it for youtube, casual listening, one-box, pickup headphones and go, listening. And more.
From memory isn't there a Linux distro specifically catered towards audio nerds? There hasn't been a release in a few years now but I have it installed as a bootable on some flash drive or other.
I'm on 5.13 currently, which is the latest version offered by my distro, Linux Mint MATE, 20.1.
KXstudio was the audio-centric distro I used to use. I still get JACK and associated tools from there; because I no longer do much audio, I have no need of the huge collection of wonderful tools that comes with the distro
I understand that the guy behind KXstudio is now the maintainer of JACK (1 and 2?) among other things. Amazing guy: completely self-taught in software development.
No chance this was due to you switching from pulseaudio/JACK to pipewire? I found that moving to pipewire really did a lot from me, especially on duplex devices.
No chance at all. So far, I've only vaguely heard of pipewire.
There is no real reason for me to even use JACK. Just that I sometime plug in an EQ and... I've been using it for years. Ever since it was the only way to get my Echo Audio firewire thingy to work with Linux.
