I know there's the "share iCloud link" function but it's so limited. I pay for all that storage, I want to use it instead of paying more for a dropbox account just so I can send large file transfers. This seems like one of the weakest parts of the iOS system.
IIRC one of the lowkey great features of icloud is "icloud drop" where you can send an email with attatchments of up to 5gb, it'll be uploaded to icloud in the background and be downloadable by the recipient for a set time. Maybe this could be an alternative solution?
Cool I didn't know about that. But I honestly just want a simple file transfer system like Dropbox instead of all these hidden convoluted ways of sending files. Not that I like Dropbox, but at least the transfer system is easy.
If the other user also has iCloud you might be able to just add them as a shared user for the folder the file is in. Don’t quote me on that. I do that with my wife but we’re on a shared plan.
Yeah, they hold your data hostage to dissuade you from moving to other platforms. I've been growling profanity for years because of their one-file-at-a-time bullshit. Not to mention the poor reliability with iCloud. I got all my data out of them recently. It was an enormous and tedious PITA.
On iPhone a workaround can be using the Files app to create .zip archives of multiple files, then sharing that.
As a company, Apple has CPTSD-level abandonment and narcissism issues, so product design is used as a way to create codependency (lock-in) and many legit interop/usability opportunities never make it through the narcissism filter.
You can. You can share a folder with any kind of files inside. If the user email you add to the share is windows based, they have to use iCloud for windows and create an ID.
