I know someone with TT2 that is currently quoting a DAVE. I'm tempted to mention Rockna but I've been told I was creating nervosa by even admitting I thought DAVE was better to him.
Tommy, I think Dave is better than the Rockna, and that’s with my current amp that has cap coupled rcas vs direct coupled xlrs for the Rockna and without M Scaler
Maybe that should make this a wake up call for you then @BenjaminBore or we’ll end up in a world full of audio-gd stuff cause there’s lots of shit in the pics
My comment wasn't directed at you personally, I was just shocked by the price. I'm not implying moar stuff makes moar better. The price just seems extreme, from a surface look at what's in there at least. If there's more to it than meets the eye beyond the FPGA and machined aluminium then I'm happy to be educated.
I could go on about thousands of man hours desiging and writing the rtl for the fpga, but I don’t think it matters, the performance is what matters and I think it has that in spades.
I read through the slides of some Rob Watts talks years ago. His approach with taps was very interesting. I've only heard a Hugo briefly though, but it wasn't a pleasant experience. What is it about the sound from the Dave that you feel differentiates it from competing DACs?
I’ve only compared it to my wavedream, but in comparison it’s stage, imaging, and separation are all a noticeable step up. I never thought I’d say this, but it almost makes the rockna sound congested in comparison.
Those positive characteristics seem to be a common sentiment with Chord DACs. I can't remember my sources or reasoning but I'd put it down to the taps. Something to do with timing being crucial for accurate spatial cues.
That’s certainly what Rob Watts says, that the timing accuracy gives you separation and that his small signal accuracy is what gives it the depth perception it has
another thing to keep in mind is my music preferences. I listen to metal and pop almost exclusively, and value separation above almost all else. this is also one of the reasons I actually liked the AHB2 amp from benchmark. after that I also value imaging and stage, as well as the ability to convey the energy of the track
