Might be to do with overall dynamic range?

Loud and quite parts are close in volume

This can be good for broadcasting as you don’t want you ears blasted off when someone screams in the mic. But takes the life everything if done too much

@Cspirou I think I understand now. I'll bet the CDs that fatigue me are compressed too much. My ears/brain suffer under the relentless wall of sound.

Once played a fantasy metal track on college radio and the VU meter never moved.

Think about Californication - Red Hot Chilli Peppers. The OG album is awesome but super compressed. There's also a less compressed remaster of it.

Also kinda brings Random Access Memories to mind; it sounds really good for how limited the dynamic range on the CD is.

I think we need to distinguish between works with legitimately lower dynamic range versus compression of dynamic range that is affecting the music quality. It's myopic to simply judge a work by its dynamic range, much like judging a DAC by SINAD.

@GoodEnoughGear - I agree. But I also think that if two versions of a recording are available and one has higher measured DR, I see no reason why I shouldn’t favor it. I often think this why the vinyl version is preferred by a lot of people.
