The one argument is interesting given all the 30-pin accessories that became worthless when Lightning came out.

I like my iPhone and I continue to be an Apple fan, but their nonsense stance on cables and chargers is just that: nonsense, to sell (or license) more proprietary cables and chargers.

Wondering how much of a difference in sound, if at all, by powering a dongle w/ lightning vs. usb-c from a laptop or a desktop with a fancy power supply...

I used to advocate for iPhones to swap over to USB-C, but I have changed my stance on that. While this is all economics, I don't think retaining the Lightning connector is purely based on selling more Lightning. If you look at the physical failure rate of USB-C next to Lightning, Lightning is pretty robust.

Lightning ports will get debris build in them, but they rarely break in comparison. Broken USB-C connector are one of the most common hardware failures on mobile devices these days. Factoring in RMA and warranty costs on mobile device repairs makes USB-C look not so good in environments I work around.

I both love and hate that USB C is the default now. On the one hand, charging my laptop though the USB C is cool. Using the same (properly rated) cables and chargers for things is nice, but man the torque the PD or Thunderbolt cables put on a USB port is scary. They don't feel secure either since they are fairly shallow. I very much worry that this convenience is going to cost big in fixes down the road.
