    Ouch! We went through that last year during a July heat wave. The old one had lasted 20 yrs. Upscaled to a quiet version heat pump. Though expensive it so far has performed as expected.

    HOT! :-) We just did like @atomicbob and stepped up to a heat pump - we did ductless mini splits in our upstairs rooms. Super quiet, really efficient, cools everything far better than our central system ever did.

    I run AC+shirtless, less $ and CO2!

    Looked up "mini split", that's the default in Asia where walls and floors are concrete and we only cool rooms in use.

    It's the default here in India for domestic, because it is only expensive. Centralised systems, usually for commercial use, are industrial-strength and priced accordingly.
