I believe the opposite. I love those bits of history's touch. I have a special fondness for albums that belonged to ladies who put a flower over the i in their names, instead of a dot. But hey, even if it belonged to boring old Fred, I like to wonder who Fred was, what was his story.

Some of my favourite used bookstore finds have been odds and ends with messages on the inner sleeves, doodles and marginalia all over the pages.

@Lyander - I bought a used Emeril Lagasse cookbook once. Turns out the inside was autographed by Emeril and it said “Happy Birthday Katy”

Wondering how it ended up at the bookstore

Damn, that must have been a beautiful surprise. Who knows, really? I have a copy of Stephen King's The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon where the recipient was offered advice about inner strength in the face of addictions. I penned my own letter next to it, planning to pass the book on to someone else, but that bridge was burnt before I could.

i mean, i sign George Herbert Walker Bush on all my LPs hoping someday a collection of esoteric electronic music will eventually, illegitimately, make its way into his presidential library.

Another answer to the op is: those who were generous (and brave) enough to lend them to friends. Or, at least, take then on house visits.

People on the buses, albums under their arm... long-lost sights of the past. It was a better world back then!
