    Wife says talk to your doctor. There are prescription medications/inhalers.

    Opiates. Narcotic antitussives are the best.

    If you're breathing fine and coughing is the only symptom, then don't worry too much. Coughing can take another week or so after testing negative from what I have seen.

    @purr1n "Narcotic antitussives..."

    Despite relentless abuse, codeine linctus is still an over the counter medicine (there too?). With a hard, relentless cough, it can be the difference between sleep and no sleep. And, to prove it can be taken safely, I have not finished the bottle I bought *years* ago.

    @Thad E Ginathom Codeine based cough syrup is prescription here. Reminds me though - One time in 2001 I was booked to appear on a TV show in China and I had a bad cough. I accidentally overdosed on some codeine cough syrup and spent the entire time trying not to throw up until after it was over.

    Probably should be prescription everywhere. It surprises me that it is not.

    I did once accidentally take a double dose, which, along with a sleeping aid, floated me off rather pleasantly. Glad my "druggy" time (half a century ago!) was psychedelics, not narcotics.

    Back to topic... If one has a loose, "productive" cough, is it dangerous to take a cough suppressant?
