I think most of, if not all, of the popular bluetooth earbuds/IEMs have an ambient mode in their software that allows you to listen to your surroundings if that's what you're looking for.
I used to think the ambient mode on wireless bluetooth stuff was a neat trick, but then when I'd take them for walks the mic pickup was super weird. Like, I'd have to take them out to talk to people, but then I'd hear arguments from inside somebody's house 50 feet away.
This is also one of the downsides of using a DAP over a smartphone. Being totally immersed in the music is cool but I might miss phone calls or certain alerts in that case.
Btw, I sort of hate that alarms on the iPhone are only through speaker. Sometimes I’d rather be notified through headphones. I understand the reason why they designed it like that but the alarm going off in the library sucks
Public transport mode: check volume; enough bass, mids and highs, double check exits; keep (at least one) elbow on guard to push through people; for exit tracks use high-energy music (rave/mosh-pit) and tap feet; 30 seconds before exit secure spot at doors; move like water, hit the exit like a tidal wave.
