Nvidia Shield did great with everything except Youtube HDR (no VP9 or AV1 support). Amazon 4K Max had all the right chips and codecs, but the framerate matching was broken on Disney+ so everything played at 60fps.
In theory. I read that they added AV1 support (Youtube HDR standard going forward). And they were closest on the framerate matching with the last gen. My Nvidia shield is dying, so I ordered the ATV as a test replacement.
AppleTV 4K (2021) works great with framerate matching on HBO Max, Netflix, Disney+ and when renting movies through AppleTV service. Can't speak to HDR as I'm still rocking a 1080p plasma.
I'm still running tvOS 14.7 as I'm nervous to update to the latest and have framerate matching break. It took years to implement properly, and I waited to buy an ATV until it was.
Just got the 2022 ATV4K in and set it up. So far, with both 4K Dolby Vision and 4K HDR Disney+ is playing at 60fps (Moana and recent Thor as tests). Doesn't matter if I turn on match framerate or not. I even manually set to 4K 24fps globally and somehow Disney+ is at 60fps. There might be some permutation that works, but not hopeful if it didn't work out of the box.
Same issue with Amazon Firestick 4k Max. Everything on paper that I wanted (at a 5th of price of ATV4K), but no go on Disney+. Probably entirely Disney's fault, but frustrating nonetheless. Since I still need a streamer, and the ATV4K seems to do everything else fine, might just keep it and hope the developers come through. Also need a Kodi replacement for NAS stuff.
Glad to hear that you worked through the ATV issues and are enjoying it now! Interesting that its Dolby Vision on Disney+ that was the problem. I wonder if others have had the same issue and if there are any workarounds.
