Part of me is thinking that since I'm going to be sticking in mid-fi for the foreseeable future I'd do well to take opportunities to contextualise what's good from what's excellent.
On the other hand this might ruin the MCTH for me.
I listened to a BHSE + Stax 007 once and it was really good but also gave me an idea what I was getting for >$10k. Perfectly satisfied with my system at 80% the sound but 1/20th the price
That’s why I listened to the Meier Corda Soul at Jan’s only for two minutes or so. It was immediately obvious that it was better at everything than the stuff I wanted to buy, but the short listening time made sure that there’s no memory of what it actually sounded like.
That’s also why I didn’t raise my hand for the European Yggdrasil loaner at first. I did now because I’m curious, but I’m not officially in yet. If I don’t get in … well, it might be for the best.
Speaking from a place of relative sanity (and stark awareness that there are more important things I really should be spending money on...) yeah I'm likely to regret getting ears on a big-boy tube amp that's known to not be overpriced swill, but the curiosity is strong. Maybe I'll leave my HD600s at home so I can pretend those are the bottleneck in my rig :P
You gotta try it. It'll tell you how good the Senns are more so than how fantastic the SB is. It'll leave you wanting, but also something to benchmark and maybe to strive for. Or not, and still be happy with what you got.
Honestly if you have very high expectations, you’re better off trying it. It won’t meet those expectations and you’ll think more positively about your own gear
I actually go into most gear demos expecting to be disappointed since I figure that's a far better barometer of my being contented with buying them than elsewise, which likely explains why I try my best to include negatives in every impressions post I make. Seems more sensible as a buyer's guide thing.
Guess this means I should raise expectations over the next week or two before I get to get ears on it :P
