Anything super resolving that isn't fucked up in any major ways. Believe it or not an aspect of plankton is being emotional immersed; in some ways plankton can be better described as a feeling
Carnegie Hall. Symphony Hall Boston. All this equipment is supposed to accurately reproduce the musician's performance, whether live or in studio (which is, also, often a concert hall). Hearing plenty of live music will help you assess equipment more than anyone else's purchase recommendations.
With TOTL money, why not work with a bespoke builder for your headphone or amp instead? Have it made *exactly* to your specifications. Or DIY and don't stop til you nail it with 100% personal satisfaction.
I agree with Chacha, and somewhat disagree. There are some equipment that are not that planktony or athletic or smooth but just work within the right system. If anything, I probably would say your mood, awareness and environment might be bigger factors. As much as what's in your system, it's also where you're at (physically and metaphorically), and the music you have with you.
Joch and Claritas are on the right track. I'd follow their advice with one extra suggestion that really helped me: go to meets if possible and listen to as much as you can there. Things sound different at meets, but it helps me narrow my tastes down a bit.
I once took a pretty date to a burlesque dance club and they had this single speaker in the corner. Total warmpoo, probably half broken. A+ for emotionality.
The above chain is my preference after literal years of working on system synergy and figuring out what I like: bass slam, holographic stage, and micro-control of chain settings
