I'm guessing that the 1266 will have odd fit/comfort concerns. And that the Stax will be too ethereal for me. But, if the weight/comfort of the LCD-4Z is okay, and it brings much of the basshead pleasures of the regular LCD-4 to the table, it could be a real contender.
Still seeking the "complement to the Utopia" HPs....
I'm hugely biased, but if possible you should try a ZMF. Very different presentations than the Utopia. Somewhat polarizing; some people like me love ZMFs and other hate them. And the other nice thing is that you can piggyback off the same amp you're currently using
@wbass read my title and it tells you everything you need to know. I've tried all sorts of planars and never truly loved one like I love dynamics. After I sold my LFF Code-6 I swore off them.
I should change my title to also include electrostats. I hate those just as much if not more
@gaspasser I'm not the OP but sometimes I feel like listening to a different presentation than what the utopia offers. I don't always feel like the super impactful, energetic and mid-centric presentation of it, sometimes it's time for a warm, relaxed, heart-melting moment with the VO.
@wbass - it's worth taking a 5-10 minutes to futz with the Abyss headband contraption. Unlike the LCD-4/z, you don't want the pads to seal tightly against your head; the pads should rest lightly against your head and even break the seal slightly to get the bass to sound right. You can also rotate the pads clockwise/anti-clockwise to get the right fit.
So, my Utopia/HD800/Starlett/EC Studio Jr. set-up is in storage for at least the next 6 months, maybe year. So, I'm looking for something till then but also a pair of HPs that won't feel redundant when I get stuff out of storage finally. Since I can't listen to speakers in this flat, I'm head-fi for quite some time, so want to go TOTL or close to it.
