But the bass of the 4 isn't there. Capable but missing that basshead magic. 2) LCD-5. Very forward even with EQ. 3) Stax 009S. Very detailed but very bright. 4) Audeze CRBN. I prefer these to the Stax, and the bass is good for a stat. But lacking some heft. Comfy though and really well made.
5) Meze Elite: I think I've come around on these somewhat. Bass is strong, maybe ever so slightly obscures the mids. Relaxed up top but keeping good staging. Strong detail though maybe not quite Susvara/Stax level there. Build quality and comfort are very good indeed.
While I'd still like to hear the Stax 007 and the Abyss 1266, I suspect that I'll find them too ethereal and too awkward to fit, respectively. My (final?) shortlist, ranked:
Meze Elite a strong all-rounder and easy to drive. LCD-4 just a basshead delight, but it's damned heavy. Verite Closed a fine closed back, comfy, and isolates well, but I think I want that last little bit of detail/clarity that comes from an open back.
See rankings in post 4 above. I think I’m reluctantly concluding that I’ll go Susvara. It’s the best I’ve heard. Very annoying that probably will need a new amp, but hoping the Topping LA90 integrated will suffice. Put on my radar by @Vtory
