I've only overclocked twice - first with the original Pentium MMX series, and then Celeron 300 -> 450. Just curious: are current CPU & memory speeds not fast enough to make overclocking unnecessary? I quit gaming and switched to Mac a long time ago so don't know if overclocking still a popular thing.
I would say for CPUs no, the benefits aren't really there. its not like back in the day where you could take a 2500k at 3ghz and take it to 4.5ghz for a massive performance boost. Now its like eeking out a few extra 100s of mhz
but often you can still drop temps and power usage through undervolting while maintaining clocks, which is still technically overclocking. that's mostly what I did for my 12700k, dropped voltage, and also boosted all core boost clocks at the same time.
for memory tweaking, it really depends on what you're playing. for some esports type games, where you are very CPU bound and want more frames, or better frame consistency, lowering memory latency can help alot with raising 1% low FPS performance
