I hadn't gone Scotch shopping in about 2 years, the price increases are a little shocking (I know - inflation, but still). Received Macallan 12 Double Cask as a gift last year and it was nice. Also received Glenlivet 15 and it was pretty smooth.
It depends what your goal is: Mine is to get passed out drunk. Ballantine's gets the job done. But, for flavor, Highland Park has much to be said for it. And the older Springbanks are excellent dessert drams.

I find it comes from a film, which I've heard of, but was never much of a movie man.
Looking back to the days when I did, I wondered why people bothered with Scotch, where one had to pay so much more for a smooth, pleasing drink, when Irish offered that at "entry level."
I’m more the peated whisky guy, don’t like sherry casks much. I love Islay Whiskies, but my favourite peated whisky comes from a Speyside distillery: Tomintoul Peaty Tang. And it’s not even very expensive.
