I was using an Amazon special RCA cable that was $9/two though, so while I expected to hear some difference, I was honestly surprised at how much of one it made. @Gazny suggested it's due to the lower/higher capacitance of the new cables, and I'm inclined to believe him.
Still surprised I'm getting such good sound from my Gungnir MB from the SE outs tho, it's still quite magical. Sold my XLR cables on Discord bc who needs 'em. I'm not into the cinemag life yet.
I think I will actually get WBC XLRs when the time comes for Yggdrasil > Cinemag > DNA! I had Pangea before, and while they are really good cables, think WBC may beat them on price:perf
I replaced some Monoprice XLRs with WBC Mogami a while back and was so impressed that I've since also replaced all my RCA interconnects with WBC. Was honestly shocked by the difference but, even allowing for placebo, the WBC cables are just better built than the generic crap. That said, I still laughed my ass off tonight when I read some rich deluded fool's raves about his magical $4K cable on the HF Susvara thread.
RCA Phono is just one of those accidents of history that stuck.
Probably the best thing that can be said about it is that it can dirt cheap. If history had decided on an engineered solution to cabling, like balanced, we probably wouldn't have had free cables in the box with so much stuff.
I dislike phono on principle. But hey, it /is./ In a big way. And my best of a bad lot cables are Blue Jeans. Because they feel good, grip tight, seem like they will last forever. Which is good, because so will phono.
