Well, I don't agree, but sometimes I can see why people think so.

I have two versions of Steven Stills: Manasas. A home digitisation of my own second-hand vinyl, which looks like it has been sand-papered, and a recently-bought CD. And I prefer to listen to the digitised LP.

The scratches are not as annoying as the hard CD mix, which seems to lack warmth in the emotional sense. And it is not even compressed to hell either, but somehow they spoilt it.

The Manasas difference is actually subtle. I have heard LP/CD comparisons where it is hard to believe it is the same record.

The difference, sometimes subtle, sometimes in-your-face, is, IMHO, in the mastering, rather than the playback medium.

Apart, of course, that the whole experience of playing vinyl is a different trip.

I don't know if I'd say digital inherently sounds flat or dull, but I don't find it as engaging as analog. I find I'm more easily distracted with digital.

@Merrick totally, it only feels flatter or duller or more muted relative to very good vinyl. i listen to digital at home day after day and it's not as though i'm finding it totally flat and unengaging. it's only by direct comparison to a really good vinyl rig that it seems like an unfair fight.

also things like vocalists still sound pretty good off a dac if the digital file is good, but then you put on more elaborate jazz or something and again the differences pop out at you.

When we switched to the digital version of any song drfindely@ was spinning last night... the three of us simultaneously howled. The jump from a Gungnir Multibit to a Dacute was quite noticeable. But then the jump from Dacute to analog was unequivocally ginormous.

@bazelio Comments like that are why I'm not chomping at the bit to upgrade from the Modi Multibit. That money could be spent on analog upgrades.

That is the takeaway for me, Merrick. Time and money is wasted in digital purgatory. Get to your personal "good enough" digital equilibrium and then stop chasing what really amount to small incremental gains after that. I feel Lynx+Gungnir Multibit is a very good final digital resting spot. Especially if headphones are in the equation. Modi Multibit can get you pretty far as well.

agreed. so far, the only dac i thought was nontrivially better was the EAR dac but that also costs a bundle, and i think i'd rather spend the $-delta between those dacs on further tuning the vinyl rig.

unless i have that much money to burn obv :) the EAR dac is mighty fine. but every step in between that i've heard so far seems not super worthwhile.
