You compile albums song by song based on the individual mastering of each song? Or is this for singles or compilations?

I always figured that the best mastering of individual songs would be on the best masterings of the album (CD or LP) that it is from. (99.9 % of the time anyway.)

    It's a rabbit hole :(
Try Joni Mitchell's album 'Blue'. Each song sounds different. You have the DCC, the japanese version, the Hoffman 45RPM et cetera. They all sound different song by song. They didn't have any consistency recording this one. Driving me crazy.
I feel you pain. Sometimes you can't win.

I tend to gravitate towards "best of" compilations for artists since I usually only like a certain percentage of their music and I have been happy with whatever I found that had the songs I wanted.

This site introduced me to "masters over format" and DR. I picked up a new compilation that was supposed to be better mastered than what I had only to find that I liked certain songs from the old album better. This has already triggered angst and I have only taken my first step down this rabbit hole.

I hadn't thought of the "best of" compilations angle. Choosing masterings is quite the rabbit hole but the rewards can be enormous.

Good list, I had about the same names. I've learned so much about jazz over at the Jazz Beat thread....has cost me a great deal of money :)
