I knew a guy who spent crazy amounts of money on all the accoutrements for his various interests, but never really had any passion for any of them. I'm talking $500 chef knives but only cooking once a month...

Really expensive Kimber match gun, but never shooting anyone... don't be that guy. If you're passionate about playing the bass, the cable doesn't matter. Until it does. If the cable is what's holding you back, then absolutely go for it. If not, no.

I do need a new cable, mine has issues. But I could just buy a cheap one. But I think it would be more fun to make one. I might get the silent connector thing, seems convenient, and not too pricy. I am slightly that guy, but I try not to be.

You can save money making your own but let me tell you what I did:
Step 1: Buy Mogami gold cables

Done. You can buy the cable in bulk I believe. But their strain relief and connectors are of incredible quality. I've been using the same ones for four years now and never a single problem despite playing in some very gnarly situations. Well-shielded and super clean sound. Buy once and don't think about it again.

P.S. If you have a friend at Guitar Center you can get a heffffty discount if you have them purchase it with their discount.

Cool. That NP2rx seems bizarre. I wouldn't want a cable to be a tone control. Use the knobs on your instrument or amp, or a pre or EQ pedal if you want.

@cizx.6 Agreed - if you're going to buy a nice gun you need to be shooting someone regularly with it.

@Azteca I've honestly been using the same Dimarzio cable for probably 15 years or more with no probs! Take good care, learn to roll it back up properly and take steps to relieve strain such as always putting it through your strap before plugging it into your instrument and any decent cable should last a long time.

@DigMe yep I hear ya. As an audio engineer I instinctively wrap everything properly with over-under which keeps it all working great. Looping through strap is great and I also use right-angle connectors where they make sense.
