If it is official then I have to consider getting one. It is one of the best headphones stock ever. Good amplifier and good source, you are set. I will keep an eye on the used market...

@Deep Funk Seems to be the case, as someone reported in one of the 660S that a rep from Senn'd confirmed the new cans would be replacing the 650. HD600 will remain in production though.

I'm sure the Massdrop HD6xx is staying around a while too...

But the Massdrop only has two rear foam discs vs the HD650's three! Completely screws up the KISS modding! /s

Sorry, been out of it thanks to school. On a more serious note, I'm certainly hoping the HD6XX is around for a good long while. Shame since I prefer the colour palette of the HD650, but beggars can't be choosers I suppose.

I'm going to want a backup HD650 for sure.

HD 6xx is really only there to deplete the stock of 650 drivers. Maybe in the future Sennheiser will do special runs of the driver for Massdrop, but I doubt it.

@Cspirou Mhm, that's an idea people've been bouncing around for a while now. If nothing else, I'm just glad this means the market has a higher saturation of HD650/6XX variants, which'll make it easier for me to pick one up one of these days. For now, I'm just enjoying having a pair over for an extended loan. I can see why so many people love these cans.

This statement has popped up several times from Senn reps, audio salesmen, etc.. In the meantime Sennheiser has emphatically stated when questioned that the 650 is not being discontinued. I want to say that even Axel Grell said it but I cannot find it.

So there's internal confusion about their most popular cans' future? I like to think people higher up the chain know they've got a winner in the 650 and don't want it to go, but reps generally have a handle on this sorta stuff (imagine the trouble they'd be in for spreading unsubstantiated rumours).

I doubt the HD 650 is the most popular. Best reputation sure. But I think the HD 25 is way more popular.

Agreed! Most well-regarded seems a far more appropriate term. Sorry, not sure what it is with me and English just now, also fucked up in a thread earlier >.<

Early this year, I emailed Sennheiser US asking the price of HD650/HD600 earpads. The response I received was that the HD650 was discontinued and earpads were not available. This may be the time, but I don't trust their Reps after that.

Yeah, I don't know what the deal is but there doesn't appear to be clear communication about this within the company. Some people say it's being discontinued and some are certain it's not going to happen. Weird.

Honestly, I'd have expected more of Sennheiser, but the way things look (lines being refreshed, little in the way of proper innovation in recent years), I'm not all that surprised that there's a bit of internal upheaval. Who knows, we might get an AKG & Austrian Audio Pt. 2.
