Nothing around here to compare to other than Pi2AES but at used prices I'd say its worth it. after a couple nights spinning discs and comparing to streamer, the Pi2AES is a little more dynamic, exciting-sounding, front-row presentation. Audiolab is a little more wall-of-sound, in a good way. better space, more like generally 5th row presentation.

but closely mic'd stuff pops out in front of the speaker plane; spacious but well defined.Tonally, there's little difference between the two. Seems to be more a difference of dynamics (and quietness), and detail. Neither are remotely fatiguing, if that's a concern.

And yes, OK, if there actually was a CD release back in the mists of time then I can usually get it (often at significantly inflated prices) on Discogs, etc. but then not a penny of that goes to the artist, which removes a big part of the reason I buy music in the first place

Precisely - if it's an artist I like, i'll be buying both CD and LP, but I'd prefer CD over DL for my digital library. Sure, 24/96 is neat, but I'm fine with 16/44 for non-streaming library.

Very happy with the rips of my older CDs. Have bought very little music in recent years, but have come to understand that "remastered" can mean "spoilt." Better to digitise one's own LPs, even if they are not perfectly clean. My brain is used to the imperfections on favourites anyway: the CD copy seems /too/ clean!

My view is, with super tubes, even the uncommon amp isn't enough to differentiate between them and hard core is required. The Jeffrey Jackson or Donald North custom amps area is needed to take advantage of the summit type tubes otherwise it's a waste. It's something I experienced myself, common components on grail tubes equals roughly the same experience. Top design, components and build thins the herd.

I'm really wondering how Elrog triangulates between EML and WE300b repro.

Seems like the going price on ebay, but in my own limited experience with them - the bigger question is do you like electrostatic? Wouldn't be worth it to me as the "good" energizer is supposedly $7k from the guy in Iceland. The current production Stax energizers don't cut it - again, limited experience though.

Definitely agree it's a subtle but noticeable improvement that becomes more apparent over time. Slight improvements in a lot of areas that become greater than the 'sum of the parts.'

Whoah, arrived early. There doesn't seem to be a way to distinguish the decade from the code. 4th digit: "Last digit of year (1958–1978), tens need to be guessed". Mine are all U9005608J, so 55/65/75 I guess. Will pop them in shortly.

I saw that recently! Was a cool feature especially to dial it in at the start but I wasnt sure how useful it would be afterwards..

Also, what do you think of the SB-1000 pro (i assume sb?). I had the SB-12NSD but sold it because my neighbour always complained and I wasnt 100% on the integration with the P3ESR I had.

yeah, SB-1000. So far it's super easy to set up. I'm in a similar situation - sometimes I want sub on, sometimes off. easy to switch thru the app. Setting the x-over was a snap and i had no idea how sensitive the Hz was - like, how did i ever properly integrate a sub with a rotary knob?
