@drfindley How did I forget about Yoshimi!? That's easily one of the best albums this century, if not the best! Grandaddy is up there too.

Nirvana's "Bleach" really is a gem. Grumpy, noisy and it sucks you in...

It is, love late 80's Nirvana stuff.
Nice to see a lot of people liking the white stripes, not many Albums more Raw than their first.

Man, this is tough. I guess I'd go for the first 10 albums I listen to when I test a new piece of gear, in no particular order.

Daft Punk - Random Access Memories

    Paul Simon - Graceland
    Alan Parsons Project- I Robot
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
    Fleetwood Mac - Rumors
Traffic - Lowspark of High Heeled Boys

I'd try to smuggle these on as well.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon
    Todd Terje - Album Time
Supertramp - Crime of the Century
Cat Stevens - Tea for the Tillerman
    Nirvana - MTV Unplugged

That'd be another interesting thread, with a small explanation of why that particular album. Like the drums and cymbal work on Time Out or the timbre of Sam Cooke's voice on Night Beat.

I based my DID choices more on feeling than fidelity since I'm going to be listening on my coconut radio or whatever, like that KK&BBQ record is super lo-fi but is perfect for dancing around the palm tree fort.

Well this would suck. Not easy at all!

Love all the King Crimson and Priest on lists. Haha, and when push comes to shove, you don't see many "audiophile artists" on lists, do you. Go figure. ;-)

*sigh*, I dunno. Off the top of my head and in no particular order...

    1. Genesis - Selling England By The Pound
    2. Peter Gabriel - 3/Melt
    3. Rush - 2112
    4. Dave Mathews - Under The Table And Dreaming
    5. Norah Jones - Come Away With Me
    6. Iron Maiden - Piece Of Mind
    7. Ozzy - Blizzard Of Oz
    8. Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
    9. Van Morrison - Moondance
    10. U2 - War

    So much missing. :-(

The term "audiophile" is overrated. If I could attend every concert of every favourite track or album I have heard through the years, I would not have my music collection.

In the end the music, as much as it may appeal to ethos and logos affects the pathos the most. Technically perfect is pleasant. Devoid of emotion, no. Kate Bush is exceptional in that she made technically perfect sounding music full of emotion for instance. Either way I stop here before I write an essay about this...

I generally use it as a term of abuse, personally. It implies cliquey, ignorant magical thinking and chin-stroking of an extreme kind. The most smug and pushy people on HF would be the sort of people you'd expect to self-describe as "audiophiles".

    Back on topic:

OK, here goes. This is difficult because it can change depending on what I listened to recently.. I love more music that I can actually recall, and there are things that I have lived with, played to death, and know every note and blemish intimately that I'm sure to be leaving out. Here's ten that I always enjoy going back to for various reasons. They may not all be the "best" albums that I own, that's debatable- but they are certainly ones I'd like to keep..

Orbital - Orbital 2 ("the brown album")
    Radiohead - OK Computer
Emily Haines and The Soft Skeleton - Knives Don't Have Your Back
    The Orb - U F Orb
Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here
Paul Simon - Concert In The Park
    Kashmir - The Good Life
Aphex Twin - Selected Ambient Works Volume 2
The Beatles - Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
    Front 242 - 05:22:09:12 Off

(Incidentally, what's with the Artist/Album order? It feels totally weird, like trying to write with your offhand. "<Album> by <artist>" feels far more natural to me...)

Think I owned my copy for 20+ years (without knowing the album title). Definitely a classic.

Never understood the whole Beatles thing though. I could think of probably 100 CDs I would throw in the lifeboat first. I guess I do have a soft spot for Lady Madonna though...

Yeah, my music player decided to play me The Brown Album(tm) on my daily commute recently. I hadn't heard it for quite a while, and forgot just how fantastic it is. Just getting home as Halcyon+on+on finished is still enough to give me chills, it turns out.

Luckily, you're not required to understand the whole Beatles thing; even just for "A Day In The Life", that damn album is worth it to me!

One either gets the Beatles thing or doesn't or anything in between. I have noticed that some of my U.K. friends aren't as enthusiastic about their music as Americans. No problem. Music peferences are a very personal thing. Whatever does it for someone is the most important part. The great thing is we live in a time with so much high quality material available to us, and great gear. So enjoy!
