So that's why my tape decks had a metal setting! o_O :D.

But seriously, I used to hear of wire recording, and could not really comprehend it. I still can't see the actual wire in that article. The Wodie Guthrie spools?

As the title suggests, this is one of a series of Forgotten Audio Formats articles from Ars Technica. Google might deliver the rest.

If anyone has watched the Foo Fighters 'Sonic Highways' documentary, they mentioned it in their stop in NYC.

They added the line "The channel’s changing-The heart is racing-From voices on a wire" to their song "I Am A River" .

    Very cool history.

Well, as my old granny used to say, "One video is worth a thousand pictures, dear!" Thank you very much. For the first time I have a real idea about how wire recording really looked and worked.

For those who enjoy such things, I seem to remember that Ars Technica (my daily nod to having once been a techie) also did a series on ancient computer data-storage devices. Find out how that granny of mine was doing her backups! And how she accessed her recipes when hard disks were still huge things with huge prices.

I actually own 1 bit of computer storage. Uses a vacuum tube, a single on or off
