    Hello friends,

This subject has been bugging me for a long time and finally I feel it's time to speak up. As you have all noticed, some of our members have tags attached to their avatars. Some of those are quite tasteful, like Sultana of Seafoam Green. Some others I literally am disgusted to even look at, let alone mention it here.

This situation with nasty name tags, in my humble opinion, is doing much more harm then good to the community. Most members and visitors have no idea whose personal or collective judgement is behind those tags and don't want to know. I want to believe, most come here to interact with SuperBestAudioFriends and seek for good vibes with audio soulmates.

Unfortunately, right now everyone is bound to look at some of the nasty tags and therefore is constantly being dragged into something unpleasant.

I understand that each member's track record is important and probably shouldn't be overlooked, especially when there is a dark side to be aware of. But why don't we make a special thread for issues, where messages important for understanding of each questionable behavior will be outlined and will contain both sides of a particular case.

Maybe a special emoji sign with a link to a post in such thread can be attached next to some members avatars? This way, everyone interested in doing research into other members profile can easily do so.

Please take this as food for a thought and forgive me if topic below was already discussed in the past. Appreciate all the feedback, no tagging though ;-)

Ps. Moderators, please feel free to modify poll questions the way you feel would help in solving this issue best.

Although I can change my own custom title now, I like the one that @ultrabike gave me back during the Changstar days. Not sure whether my title should be viewed as a positive or negative one though :p

This was the expected response, came in faster than expected :p

    @Audio Zenith
My opinion matters little here, I believe, but as far as my thoughts on this topic go I remain undecided. I feel it all really boils down to inside jokes and good-natured crude humour, such as what you get with @thegunner100 (whom I still insist has an interesting title) and @jowls (still no idea what that's about). List goes on.

Now of course, there are explicitly demeaning titles assigned to people who either generally make an ass of themselves or pick fights where none need be picked— lots of those, even among more established and respected members. Those are another story entirely, and I kinda see your point. Thing is, I don't believe SBAF was meant to be a massive thing, really, more just a place for a limited set of "known variables" to provide insight into consumer products and for others to ask stupid questions hoping they didn't miss reading an answer like 10 pages back.

I've not been a member for long at all, but I knew what I signed up for. Now that Dislikes are back in full force, this resembles the SBAF I was more familiar with: a haven of sorts, where people can just hang out and be themselves. I remember not too long ago when certain mods and admins got in hot water for being politically incorrect about matters that many (myself included) were sensitive to. Did I get pissed off for casual jokes about [redacted]? f**k yes. But I have friends IRL who make shitty jokes that make me wanna kick them in the face too. That doesn't necessarily take away from the good aspects of their character.

Besides, some of the other members have admitted to being of an older make, growing up in a less PC world. Can't really blame them for that any more than I can be blamed for caring about trans rights, freedom of religious expression (or lack thereof), gender equality, or the poor state of mental health care.

Others have said it better with fewer words, I feel. Counter-culture pirate ships or private pub somewhere off the beaten path are both excellent analogies.

I've noticed that the derogatory tags and most of the time find them mildly amusing. A couple of times I've thought "huh, that's a bit strong". More often than not the tags are pleasant and some kind of in-joke that I have no idea about.

But overall I like the tags. They add character, and the negative ones seem to be non-permanent. And are invariably the result of doing something fairly stupid, quite persistently, on the forum. It seems to me that audio forums attract a particularly obsessive kind of personality and sometimes people really need to be smacked over the head repeatedly before getting the hint. And if they help the moderators let of steam a bit to stay sane then that's also good.

I thought the tags were visually fairly subtle, I just don't notice them most the time. The avatar photo and username are prominent enough that my eye often just skips the tag entirely.

The tags are like nicknames, you can't pick your own. They must be given, usually earned.

Unless you are Star Lord, then you can pick your own. (And it would be Star Lord.)

I hope the tags stay, even the "negative" ones. I feel like this is something mods already do, but I'd suggest some definite time limit to the "punitive" tags, similar to temporary bans. Seems like some here have changed their ways as a result of such public spankins, and if so, probably best for SBAF to grant them a little bit less shame. Otherwise this place could come across like a bully's haunt, which it isn't.

If memory serves, there was a member who was making a lot of noise (both in the SBAF sense and traditional) just a little while ago and someone "temporarily" reactivated Dislikes in response. I mean, what they said was kinda ass, but...

While on the topic of custom titles, may I ask how the hell you got yours @Kunlun? Been curious for ages. I don't see any relevance at all

I think the personal tags are awesome and reflect the underlying nature of this board. It maybe slightly less aggressive and more palatable for some, and it's matured from the days of yesteryear, but people are people and the mischievous persona here is what keeps me coming back for more.

It's not my fault people these days are such wimps and sensitive to jokes. Maybe the world wouldn't be in such disarray if they went outside and stopped staring at a screen, whether it be a phone, computer, or tv. Sure it's fun and practical sharing stories over the internet instantaneously, but when you had a sense of anticipation from receiving a letter in the mail from a relative or friend (that took days or weeks to get to you), that message written on paper actually meant more (and were more often than not saved and cherished). Same reason geezers like me (41 years old) love vinyl and cd's, because I physically have the media in my hand and accessible, It won't get lost if a computer crashes or a password gets lost.

People these days are spoiled by instantaneous access to almost whatever they please, myself included, the difference is that I can still remember when that wasn't the case. I learned to wait and I definitely didn't always have the patience, but it was what it was. Now people throw hissy fits and temper tantrums over the slightest inconvenience.

My message to you people is GROW UP !! Get over it, go do something, meet actual people in the physical domain, I know that's really scary for many, but just try it. STOP FEELING SORRY FOR YOUR SELF !!!

paging @zerodeefex I'm ready for my custom tag skipper

Some are born with tags, some achieve tags and others have tags thrust upon them.

You seem too pure for this world.

This is a website for adults (and spwath) who can say "doo-doo" and "tushy" without flinching. Just the other day @purr1n said some headphones sounded like a dingleberry and called someone a poopyface. That's the kind of hard swearing, tell-it-like-it-is people we are.
