Maybe we need something like this speaker to enjoy our new shiny Spatial lossless music.

Former Apple geek designed these. I don't even know what triphonic is?

Without even looking at it, I'm confident enough to say that it's a gimmick and crap.

LOL yes. I was working, so I didn't want to waste time making fine art if you know what I mean. Scribbled everything with a marker in less than 100 seconds and took a quick photo to my Google drive. I felt a picture on the home page was appropriate: MQA bites the dust, along with other proprietary formats of history.

Yes, I'm mocking the minimum phase filter per the second unfold (only supported in hardware) of MQA. Minimum phase filter has its place with low-latency applications, but it is messes up time-domain badly.

Well, judging by the picture you'll need two turntables to get this triphonic wizardry to work.

Lossless and hi-red are nice for audio nerds like us but most people won’t care or even be able to tell a difference on the equipment they have. Offering it for the same price though definitely puts the hurt on other players in the market. What will succeed I think is the Dolby atmos surround encoding or whatever as that will work with the kajillion AirPods they’ve sold (or maybe only the pros?). Your average punter will definitely be able to tell that difference and it’ll probably be a way to resell (or whatever the term would be in streaming parlance) the same music again.

Apple has an API to its music store (called MusicKit of course) but I haven’t ever really looked into it so don’t know if it’d be possible to use with a Pi based streamer.

I was a little excited to read about Amazon’s bricking change, most because I wanted to check out their Dolby music library. Turns out it only works with one of their echo speakers. Useless.

then I was a little excited to read about Apple's announcement, only to learn they aren’t supporting windows with lossless.
    Ug.

I’ve never compared it vs upnp and I’ve read people say they can’t hear a difference but I’m a snob and don’t like the idea. Also it uses up so much battery life on the device you only get a few hours on an iPod touch.

That’s the main issue with AirPlay to me, it’s streaming the media to your renderer rather than telling the renderer what to do and getting out of the way. It not only wastes battery on your device but it limits how you use your device while you’re streaming.

hmmm... i really like my roon + Qobuz + pi2AES setup now. really hoping that Qobuz will stay alive but at this point im starting to build up an offline library so i can still have high quality music in case it all goes kaputz.

P.S. i'm of the opinion that Apple Music quality will still remain sub-par compared to the other streaming services. I prefer FLAC over apple's ALAC but that might just be my personal bias.still, my ears tell me that FLAC sounds better (I still have apple music subscription but that one is for the fam, while roon/qobuz is for me)

ALAC and FLAC are both lossless formats AFAIK, you should be able to convert in either direction without sounding any different. Try purchasing the same track in both formats, convert to a common format (such as WAV) and compare in an audio editor. The differences could be down to different masters, etc. Or it could be "personal bias" ;)

FLAC and ALAC are both open source, lossless formats. Any preference would only be for relevant for playback or management software. Sound wise, they are identical. Same bits once decoded.

I met a guy at RMAF many year ago that claimed he could hear the difference between a WAV and a FLAC. Ug.

Lol well I originally thought they wouldn't sound different, until I got my iPod video 5.5 and had to feed it ALAC and was confused why it sounded more compressed. Installed rockbox on it so I could put in FLAC and it sounded good again

I then thought maybe it’s just the iPod so I played back the tracks on Roon to my modius/jot2 chain and indeed it sounds different to me. Also the same tracks played back between Qobuz vs Apple Music I noticed the difference, but that might be because of the different applications and the way they process sounds

for reference I compared these albums between FLAC vs ALAC
    • Nipsey Hussle - victory lap
    • Justin Timberlake- future sex love sounds
Maybe they were just mastered different or converted differently?

…or maybe youre right, I’m just crazy and it’s all in my head lol

That’s no surprise. Apple settled on AAC for BT audio, highly unlikely they’d pay Sony for LDAC, and if they developed another proprietary format they’d just get criticized for that instead. I wouldn’t consider any wireless headphone lossless even if LDAC could technically manage.
