Though my subjective pair of ears likes HEKv2 much more, I agree. HD800 defends itself nicely, that's true.

I am enjoying the popcorn there- he seems to be running through every expensive headphone in a fit of upgradeitis. It's tiring to watch, I wonder if there's any time left to get used to a stable system and just enjoy music.

@Rthomas - once your Stax experiment is over (after buying an SR-007 and a BHSE, presumably), is the next stop an Abyss? :)

Hey@Rthomas, didn't you just listen to the Stax 007 and the KGSShv very very recently? And 220V to boot?;)

I have gone from the modded HD800 to the HD800S and HEKv2. I was somewhat disappointed that the HEKv2 didn't impress me more compared to the HD800S - then I tried the porting mod on the HEKv2. This mod lifted the HEKv2 performance significantly for me, pulling it significantly ahead of the HD800S to my ears.

Could you describe in some detail or provide a link to what the porting mod is about? Thanks.

Details are on SBAF - google for 'Feilian mod' and you will get the details. Or search directly on SBAF.

Note that I did a very simple airgap mod with thin strips of rubber washer material - I couldn't be bothered with the full blown feilian setup. In my tiny mind an air gap is an airgap is an air gap.

Relieving the backpressure on the driver made a big difference for me. I much, much prefer it over the Utopia (a forward, bright, edgy mess of a headphone IMHO - again, YMMV).

Ok, guilty as charged. Since selling the HD650 I have been hunting for nirvana. I had to give the Utopias a shot after all the hype but I think I'm done with slightly north of Neutral headphones as they just don't do it for me.

Next up is a demo LCD4 from a dealer and this weekend I'm ordering a SR007 + KGSSHV Carbon from Mjolnir so you were pretty damn close :D

    Will report back.

Hahah, nearly called it :D At least the Carbon would have a shorter round trip for servicing.

The main thing is.. does all this swapping about make you happier, or just more antsy and FOMO-tastic? If you're actually enjoying the misery, then I suppose it's a less harmful habit than racing sports cars on public roads coked out of your brain- and marginally cheaper too.

I guess I worry that someone swapping around all the time might end up forgetting how to listen to and enjoy the music in the end. Sometimes you just have to let things settle.

There must be something in the human brain that delivers a hit of endorphins with every gear upgrade. I have been throwing money at diminishing returns for a while now. Knowing when to stop and be happy is the thing. I past that point about 12-18 months ago. Only now is the reality catching up with me - I have burned a bunch of cash for pretty marginal improvements (mostly).

Makes some sense to me. Jumping right to the Godlike stat rig of Carbon + SR-007 cuts out an awful lot of middle ground that most of step through to get to Nirvana.

If you have not had a listen to 007 MK I (especially those with 70XXX serial numbers), may I suggest you give a try. In the world of electrostatic phones, early 007s seem to be super 650s, similar tonality but better in almost every way.

This happened to me as well. A part of the game, I guess. Though with all those audio adventures experience comes. I still buy stuff, but am now more picky and also so much more aware of what works for me. It took years to be in that place, but I'm finally there.

The outcome is that disappointment isn't there anymore.

Once you understand there's no "end" in this hobby, you're in "end-game" territory. :p

    Ditto for the 007 MK1 70xxx!
You may also want to give a try to the 007A if you have a Carbon, the current 007a revision with port and spring mods is tied with the early 007 in sound quality according to DIY stat land.

    It's very Zen.

I feel like I did this a bit with the LCD4s...but to be honest I enjoy listening to them so much, I don't mind that they're "it" for me, for now.
