If they were closed back, I might actually give a chance. I mean what's the use case of this? I can't wear it on a plane travel, listening to it on a public spot will leak the sound to the people around the user. What the hell audeze, I was waiting for a proper planar IEM that is portable in size and practical.

No headband hair when listening at home? That's about it I think.

Now you are being overdramatic, there are few iems which are "open back" or they use vents and they are completely fine for public use. Like fiio ex1.

These look like they could be a prototype for the first iems ever made in human history.

"As one of the first in-ear planar magnetic headphones, the iSINE Series raises the bar for audiophile sound quality with lower distortion, superior bass response (flat to 10Hz!), and a wider soundstage than any other in-ear in its price category. Designed and assembled at Audeze’s California factory, they worked closely with strategic partner Designworks, a BMW Group Company."

Ah, so it is Audeze... been expecting this for a while now. I remember Tyll being coy about the topic of planar IEMs when I sent him a YH-5M and some other stuff for measurements more than a year ago. About leakage, it shouldn't be too bad since there's damping material behind the drivers. I won't be touching this until Audeze comes out and addresses their driver failure issues without any BS though.

@yaluen I have yh-5m great piece of engineering. If you get the fit right they have nice yamaha sound similar like hp-1. Very sensitive headphones, good for portable use but dues to design you cant wear them outside. Did you sell yours?

Open back IEMs are nothing new. The Stax in-ears are open back.
I view these types of things as less "portable" and more "transportable."
Like the sort of device you'd use to roam around the house or take to an office during your lunch break. Not the sort of thing you'd use in a library or on the bus.

Having owned two different pairs of stax IEMs, the open backed IEM concept doesn't seem odd to me. I'm actually really interested in hearing these. Hopefully they go for a more... not shit tuning than most of their recent efforts.

I would actually want one if they were closed back. Why open? Seems kinda stupid. Most of the times iems are for portable use, when you want isolation.
I guess it could still be usefull though.
I might consider it if they are any good

I don't know about you but 99% of my life is spent not on public transportation. I actually really enjoyed the STAX IEMs because they allowed me to keep aware of my situation while enjoying my music.

I like my UERM and Andromeda for what they are, but I find isolation unsettling unless I REALLY want to focus or I'm on traveling for work.

Yeah, I was thinking more, they could actually be pretty usefull. Doing anything where you are moving, wouldent be that good to be completly isolated. Biking, running, walking, ect....

When you're in NYC commuting 2 hours a day on the train, isolation is a must.

For that person I recommend looking into the QC20. No one does ANC like Bose.

I put open IEMs in one category with earbuds in terms of functionality. I've always thought of getting the STAX IEMs as a high-quality alternative to earbuds.

How does the IEM ANC compare to their over ears? Tyll's plots make me think that the over-ears have better isolation. This way you also get the option of wearing your IEMs and the over ears for better sound and even more isolation, but unless really need that much isolation, you might just be better off just using normal IEMs. Also I guess the QC20 don't really compete with good IEMs in SQ.

It goes QC35 > QC20 > QC25 in terms of isolation due to ANC. The QC20 replacement, the QC30 hits in September. I still prefer the in ears due to "aware mode" where, at the press of a button, you hear external noise. This makes them SUPER versatile. There's aware mode, passive mode, and ANC making them the most useful travel headphone I own.

In terms of SQ they lose compared to the RE-00s and vibratos.

Certainly a fair point. :) But there are many other options in this product space that seem to accomplish this goal less, er, obtrusively than a pair of weighty, stingray-shaped IEMs. And that's without even discussing Audeze's rather dubious reputation for lackluster quality control.

As @brencho suggested, introducing a radically new product line while there's still so much work to be done hammering out the flaws in their current offerings strikes me as hubristic. While overt hostility to this product announcement probably isn't a very charitable reaction, it seems somewhat warranted given the circumstances. Not that you were saying anything on this point one way or the other, @MuppetFace, I just wanted to make my own thoughts clear. It's not my usual mode to shit on something out of hand, especially when certain aspects of it do seem innovative.

As someone who seriously enjoyed his SINE portable, these vaguely ghoulish IEMs seem, in a few ways, like a major step backward for Audeze. Time will tell if that presumption is warranted, of course. I am often wrong. :p
