I haven't listened to enough RATM to make a call but I don't think he's viewed in that same light.
To be fair whether one likes Flea or not he deserves the respect that we would afford any accomplished professional musician. Regardless of whether anyone likes the results I know for a fact that he has challenged himself to become a better musician by taking lessons and pushing himself into uncomfortable/unfamiliar musical situations such as playing with jazz bands, etc.. Let's not forget that in the end music is a subjective pursuit.

Tina was great, and I always loved Pixies bassist Kim Deal.
Then again I just loved Pixies.

Me too, man. I was a big Pixies fan back in the day. Surfer Rosa is a fave.

Well, how about Victor Wooten doing progressive metal.

I think I've probably mentioned ROn Carter in here before, but he is a jazz bass legend that just keeps on going and going. Here is covering the great Miles Davis album, whom he played with for many years.

One of my favorite bass lines. I cant play it, due to two things. Too hard, and my bass only has 4 strings.

So I'm heavily biased here, but I really love the sound of Colin Greenwood's bass lines in Radiohead. Here are a couple videos, one with the fuzz bass singing out and one clean. But in so many songs, he has such an interesting layer to Radiohead's sound. I'm not sure he's uber-talented, but I love what he does.

watching DT videos always reminds me of this:

On another note, I'm surprised Billy Sheehan hasnt been mentioned yet - he was my gateway into bass players, when I joined a friend's band to play the bass out of the blue when their bassist dropped out (the first band i ever played for and the first time i'd played a bass guitar!). These guys were covering stuff from Pantera's "Cemetery Gates" to Mr. Big's "Daddy Brother Lover Little Boy" which had some insane bass bits that I dont know how i managed to pull off on stage (with some modification of course, I didnt use a drill :D)

It was so surreal seeing Mr. Big live a few years later and the same song live!

I also love how he accompanies Paul Gilbert to do a kind of dual solo

I have a lot of love for jPop. One of my favorite bassists is Isamu Takita, this bass solo of his is one of my favorite

Wow, man that's amazing! I'm going to have to pick that up immediately. What other works of Ron Carter do you recommend?

Any love for great bassist/vocalists? Greg Lake (King Crimson/ELP) and Doug Pinnick (King's X).

I had a Crush on Mellisa Auf Der as a teen, she was the lead vocalist an bassist for a Black Sabbath cover band. She's not particularly amazing or exceptionally talented, but I enjoyed her vocals an their music

Ron Carter is one of the most recorded musicians in history. I don't think that a truly accurate discography exists for him. But you could start here. Find someone he's played with that appeals to you. That includes almost every type of music one can imagine.

Carter is just really a remarkable dude. His level of education and experience puts him in a rare stratosphere with very few equals.

@Mshenay Have you ever listened to any Mingus? If not then check out Live at Antibes.

Carter is who I listened to and transcribed to learn how to walk (granted I used it for accompanying on a keyboard/piano rather than an actual bass). In addition to loving his work, I loved him as a great resource for learning how to construct bass lines.

Found this tonight, very impressive and beautiful! I've often imagined what a bass Orchestra would be like when I was younger lol

Just rediscovered Mick Karn. Sometimes I pick a random album to listen to. Something about the way he grooves and drives the melodies...

P.S. His compositions are sometimes classically beautiful out of the blue.
