I had a piece of home here in Canada. Schlenkerla tavern is 7 mins walk from my birthplace - and the actual brewery is by my former high school. Bamberg offers 9 real breweries.

This Kräusenber cost a fortune but was an utterly delicious aperitif before new year's eve dinner. It had a wonderfully subtle smokey exit. Look at that stoutish head...it had a great smell.

The glass is a Bockbier cup from my family brewery (1899-1968).

In the world of German brewing, Kräusen refers to the intense proliferation of bubbles and foam formed during fermentation of a young or “green” beer. And Aufkräusen (literally to kräusen it up), refers to a historic brewing technique in which some green beer is added to a fully-matured lager. This is a very old and very typically German tradition, and today even English-speaking brewers refer to this technique as krausening. Krausening brings the vibrant freshness of young beer to the more refined, austere flavors of a fully-matured lager.

Aecht Schlenkerla Kräusen starts out as normal Helles Schlenkerla Lager and matures for months in the old rock cellars underneath the brewery. Just before filling it is blended using the before mentioned "Kräusen" technique with classic Märzen Rauchbier. The result is an unfiltered, bottom fermented and amber color Märzen Lager hybrid with a vibrant and slightly smoky flavor.

Schlenkerla Urbock: brewed in November for the early dark days of winter. Tastes like liquid bacon for some.

thanks and your re-tweets have inspired me.

you may have to be my sensei on Belgian styles, cuz, I have had only a few on my new beer journey and have not enjoyed the very few merican ones. I do recall liking some real Belgians in the past but they were probably run of the mill things like Hoegarden.

ah German Bocks can be very good, i should start searching for them more frequently.
the B I G problem with the amerikan craft beer industry, is many are now canning and putting barely passable beer into stores thus crowding out very good euro options that know how to brew 1000x better than neck beards in their new hipster pubs.

add Tripel Karmeliet to your Belgian ToDo. lighter, complex and amazing no matter the season or meal.
do not buy anything from Spencer, the only USA based Trappist brewery in MA.

We have a very vibrant craft brewery scene in Calgary...and you can get all sorts of beer in fancy cans...but much is style over substance. Very attractive can designs that do not do justice to the content. The eye is doing the purchase, not the throat.

Sure, it is fresh, and the first few swigs taste very good - however my wife and I are sharing the cans as we cannot finish one ourselves.

The other problem is consistency, One day the IPA is tasty and crisp, and the next day it looks and tastes like dishwashing brine.

As to the US: great beers in Bend, OR.

I am a relative newbie when it comes to beer. Folks in these parts do like their Yeti though.

As for Celebrator, I can only go on my memories of having a bottle over 30 years ago. Great beer!
