Generally, if saving money is your goal, what you want is a final solution, not a cheap one.

Was it from Dave Mahler's list on Headfi? I bought one because of his recommendation, and I hated it. Very thin. Not enough weight to the instruments. Terrible balance between bass (none) and treble (too much). Comfort and isolation weren't terrible and they were easy to drive. I gave them to my Dad who is not an audiophile and seems immune to too much treble. But, I prefer warmth and ease of listening to absolute neutrality and accuracy. Maybe they would work well for others.

I've had to answer this f'ing question so many times in the intro threads and via PMs at HF. I give David the benefit of the doubt: he recommended it back in 2011, when not that much was available (though even back then, SRH840 was a better choice except for comfort; even the original M50 wasn't a total sonic disaster).

DT660 has a nice sweet airy tone with string instruments, so it could be OK if you listen to a lot of chamber music and it sounds halfway decent with light orchestral works such as serenades. Piano tone sounds dull--very undefined texture and slow pacing. Organ is totally unlistenable because of the zingy hot highs.

If you need a cheap closed can, get a Yoga clone (XPT100 / HM5) instead. Tape a small circle of stiff felt in front of the driver to tame the highs a little, if they bother you. Another, somewhat more expensive idea, is MDR1R with Austin's mods.

    Best luck!
