That's great in theory, but I have NEVER experienced that in real life. Every single time an active preamp has sounded better than a passive preamp or no preamp. It was like this for me 38 years ago and it is the same today. Watch this:

All BHK is saying in that video is that he likes the color added by a tube preamp. He even admits that he can't explain why. Some people like their sound colored by multiple components and others like a system to be as transparent as possible. You appear to belong to the first camp while @bazelio is in the second camp.

The source has to be capable of driving the amp. If not, you could insert an active device to help. This would result in the perception that a preamp is better. Also, in your case, Winders, you just seem to have a strong preference for a particular coloration that tube linestages provide. I'm not judging your preference either way. But that's not transparency, which is what I was commenting on to bixby. And it's certainly not "better" in a general sense. It's just your own preference. Lastly, there's no YouTube video that can change what I hear in my living room, but I do find it apropos that the guy in the video is like 129 years old. The bottom line is simply that when source and amp are electrically compatible, then an extra power supply, extra THD bottles, and extra wires connecting to and from these can never provide extra transparency. Only the opposite.

@bazelio, I'm fairly certain you're as naive as you sound only because you've never doubled or tripled up on active preamplifiers. The musicality goes through the roof. I get chills and I verify this objectively with my rectal thermometer. Measurements later.

    Care to enlighten us?

There probably should be, given the fact that there are tube preamps and amps with low distortion. BAT springs to mind but then we are back at the starting point, how best to spend 8 k$

Come on friends, don get grumpy. I’m learning a lot here. I did understand @bazelio point of view, but I’m interested in yours view @winders. Can you explain the effects of tubes without “coloring” the sound?

Moved this here because this is yet another departure from discussing "Your favorite preamp tube type"...

@winders, that guy from BHK obviously has a horse in the race. About his CD argument, maybe his system had output impedance problems and an external pre-amp helped. Who knows. But I would caution not automatically generalize that adding random pre-amp stages to any system is beneficial.

A new digital processing technology by French manufacturer Leedh was demoed at Munich High end this year.
Their digital attenuation code looks like it will settle the direct vs preamp debate.
This code is going to be implemented in a future Audirvana + release, so checking it will be easy.

I didn't know he was designing products for PS Audio, but now I know to avoid PS Audio due to Burger King. He calls the digital attenuator on the DirectStream DAC "pretty good" in the video, but then says a preamp is better. LOL. The digital volume on the Direct Stream DAC is terrible. Just a couple weeks ago I heard that thing, and when bypassing the digital volume and going through a Baz Audio autoformer to the amp (Pass XA25) it was night and day. Happy Fathers Day.
