It is crazy the courage people have on the internet.
    _____________
@BIG POPPA is a cocky, silly, and funny guy who is a bit braggadocios etc but I'll be darned if he is not one of the coolest guys in this hobby. Not a shiller, pretty honest, accepting of a lot of people, willing to help peoples systems get better from the ground up, has had wire making classes for power cables and headphone cables, and always putting together meets and organizing events so that enthusiasts can hear the latest before purchasing.

If you want to encourage people to hear things before you buy and you live in the northwest, you are missing a big part of that by not mentioning one of the meets he helps put together. Not just him but the people that live up there that he hangs with. Not to mention he has been at it for years!!! Him FINALLY wanting a new DAC means that he has been trying to get the most of what he has before upgrading.

Just sayin... I guess his personality may make it a bit odd for people here to see that but I give props where props are due.

Well, it's a matter of attitude per se.

He came in, guns blazing, proclaiming his system as being "uber tweaked", "overachieving" and "sounds amazing."

But that's like... pretty true for most of the folks here, one way or another. Just recently we had this baller:
    http://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/the-fugly-mods-an-hd800-adventure.5893/

It's basically context. We know very little about @BIG POPPA beyond him organizing meets, and we're basically depending on you guys, the folks who have met him in person, to tell us how he is.

But it seems even you guys can't really tell us why or how his system is "uber tweaked", "overachieving" and "sounds amazing" so... unless I'm missing something, it's basically that some of us here are fishing for you to tell us how amazing this person is.

From what I'm getting, he seems to be a cool guy, but that doesn't explain why he is trying to go all "holier than thou" on us, and honestly, I don't have a problem with that (I am always open to learning from other folks, and it may in fact be true that he's indeed holier than me), but again, please do realize that we have senior members here. Quite literally. And I'm guessing they're not taking too kindly to the way he's coming across.

Unless now you tell us he's a 100-year-old hermit who has been at this game for as long as it's existed... and he's taken apart all of the headphones and speakers in existence, do more to them than just simply recabling them, and all of his gears are modded beyond just changing the interconnect cables.

So... please, do tell us! <- I'm being 100% serious. I am hoping to know @BIG POPPA better because he seems like a cool guy.

If there's one thing I like about this place is that we hold everybody to the same standards.

When somebody asks a question, and it's extremely vague, and we can't get that person to provide details, it is unacceptable here. When somebody says their gear is excellent, we expect something more than curt, shallow and vague replies about it - we expect details, or it is unacceptable.

Cool guy or not, these standards protect us from fucktards, quackery and snakeoil. The fact that he is extremely active in his local community and supposedly is extremely knowledgeable indicates that he should be able to provide these answers and information when asked, not dance around the topics and treat us like we are noobs. It's insulting.

If Einstein said "You can't travel faster than the speed of light. Trust me dog, you just can't. I've done, like, math and shit, and I know."... and didn't back it up, how do you think that would have been received by others in that community?

I'm sure we've banned plenty of nice guys. Nice isn't enough.

If the wire-making classes start with copper scrap and end with drawplates, then I'm interested.

Notwithstanding (and all that), I appreciate @gbeast's perpsective based on the real person.

    Minor aside for context:
I watch this YouTube show called Hot Ones, and am rather fond of it. Shortform, they interview celebrities over stupidly spicy wings for kicks.

Some time ago they interviewed this gent named Action Bronson, a rapper, I'm told. Never heard of the dude before watching that episode, left a comment on the video (yeah, instant death wish) saying he seemed a rude and inconsiderate guest, got flak for it. "He's a New Yorker through and though, you never met one of them?", "That's just his sense of humour, you can tell Sean (the host) is into it.", and "Who the f**k are you? Action'll have your pansy ass for breakfast."

Just for the record, while I do know that some people enjoy having their asses eaten (out), it's not my thing, personally.

... Sorry, that was cruder than usual for me.

    *****

atomicbob and gbeast are members whose contributions are numerous and well-respected, if occasionally contentious (hah). Have yet to meet either IRL or interact with them extensively, but their vouching for BIG POPPA convinces me that he very likely knows his shit. Despite that, I do agree that it's more a matter of attitude than knowledge. Granted, having both would be amazing, but I felt BIG POPPA's demeanour was a tad too-holy-for-thou, and reminded me of that one Action Bronson interview I talked about in the spoiler.

I know nothing yet about tweaking DACs, and would love to learn from anyone who's garnered as much positive feedback as he has.

@BIG POPPA I don't know many (any?) manufacturers who are happy to have their customers tinker with their products, so rather doubt Schiit is alone in that regard. Still, would be interested in seeing if you can make something good of the infamous S19 that many here seem to be less than fond of.

Also, pardon my asking but what exactly do you mean when you say you use metallurgy to tweak the sound? Do you anneal components to alter their performance, swap materials around or use alchemy to turn all the connectors into triple-9 gold for maximum efficiency (last one is sarcasm).

At least he doesn't use cardboard.

Although, "metalurgy" might, at a stretch, cover replacing the fuse with a nail.

Or simply a person who is into this hobby for the gear moreso than the music.

It's easy to know what side of that particular fence people fall on.

This only happens if someone decides to do some crap to whatever the product they bought, then go bitch back to them about having it fixed under warranty. They've seen enough of this BS and are heading it off at the pass before it gets too big a problem. They probably just recommended that you don't do that. Otherwise they couldn't give two fucks about what you do to it. That's on you. I'd figure most companies are like that as well.
