I don't think anyone mixes music to be listened to on studio monitors, though they are mastered initially through them. Some mixing engineers do listen through other systems, as do some artists before release, and if the intent is to make them sound good, they would listen through good sounding systems, if they knew what those are.

I am in total agreement with you that as music reviewers they should respect the material, and should match horses for courses. I have picked up a few cassettes from Burger Records down the road in cassette form only, though am not aware if they were mixed down to two track (sounds like it, though). Very tasty music, actually.
