I was wondering if anyone has tried swapping any pads on this flagship from Denon? Possible? Advisable? Thanks

I was wondering if anyone has even bothered to try to fix everything that's wrong with this headphone. Hey, at least someone tried with HD700 and it seemed to have worked. Good luck with that.

Truth be told, I've never heard the D7100 and I wonder if many of the haters really have? It can't be that terrible sounding, even if the physical design was that different than the old D7000.

Those pictures though, with the ships, that was pretty funny.

I haven't heard it either, but judging from the measurements from Tyll H. I assume they sound very uneven. The bass is huge and the treble appears emphasized. The midrange is notched and according to Tyll they have some of the worst ringing he's ever seen in a headphone. Granted the DXXXX series from Denon is far from perfect as well but the older ones appear significantly better... That doesn't mean that modding couldn't bring the 7100 into the ballpark however, still not practical for the price, but if you could get a pair comparitively cheap just to mod...

I heard it a few years ago and it didn't take me more than 10 seconds to realize it was an utter POS. Admittedly I'm not a big fan of D7000 either, it took a TH900 (virtually an upgraded version of D7000 by Foster/Fostex) for me to appreciate closed-back headphones. But the D7100 was a whole new level of garbage.

It's no secret that Denon's D2000/5000/7000 were (secretly) made by Foster, Fostex's parent company which later made TH900. That's why they all share a similar design, V-shaped warm euphonic sound signature with strong bass emphasis. Denon by themselves didn't have what it takes to produce a decent set of cans, and when Foster decided that they shall no longer make any more headphones for Denon, Denon had to come up with a completely new phones of their own with practically little to no experience. Hence the D7100.

I actually thought the AH-D600 was decent enough. Liquidy bass, and amazing comfort. Maybe not the best technically but you could certainly do worse, and they were going for pretty cheap.
