I do wish he had a 2.5 way design or a MTM design that had more extension. And perhaps the Scan Speak Berylium tweeter instead of that ribbon he chose. (other than price considerations of course).
Oh and also why he chose the SB acoustics passive radiator over the matching Purifi passive radiator (besides price considerations)

I asked him these questions actually.. waiting to see if he'll indulge me with an answer.

i also think this cabinet would work, if i want to keep it a floorstanding speaker look wise to do away with stands.

Just need to seal up the area below that's not required with made some sand to weigh it down.

First one is out of the question.. too DIY.

The Nelson Pass one looks familiar..I remember seeing a similar OB design in his room at RMAF back in 2009ish?

Yeah.. The winner to me is that PAP Trio design. Wife also gave the thumbs up on aesthetics. I'll have to make that happen!

His TL looks very nice to me. Unlike many, he corrects for a good impulse response as well.

Glad you're leaning in the direction of a PAP clone! I don't know about the others, but I'd stay away from that BMR kit. They were my first passive speakers, and I wouldn't recommend them for a lot of reasons.

Could you elaborate? Or if you did, which thread was it in? I thought they had a positive response here.

I bought mine from Philharmonic Audio when it was still in business. On paper, they're a great value. Isn't that the main reason why people buy these BMRs? RAAL tweeter and a claimed extension to 30hz. Seems like a good purchase, but I didn't like them for a few reasons.

    - It's inefficient and has a complicated crossover, so it's not that lively nor does it have the immediacy of more efficient designs.
    - The incoherency between the BMR midrange driver and RAAL tweeter was significant enough that the speakers were changing my listening habits. I was listening more to music with interesting things going on in the treble because I wanted to hear that RAAL sparkle. The midrange driver could not keep up with the tweeter at all.
    - Bass did reach low, but the quality of it wasn't very good. Kind of boomy and one-note. What can you really expect from a single 6.5" woofer, though?
    - It's kind of v-shaped, but maybe not solely because of frequency response. The BMR driver handling the mids wasn't that resolving so it kind of took a back seat to the other drivers.

The monitors that replaced my BMR's were 2-way MTM speakers with soft domes. Even though they had twice the woofer surface area (6.5"x2), they only extended to 40hz which meant they were somewhat more efficient. Immediately, I noticed they were more lively, had coherency through the whole frequency range thanks to driver technologies that weren't completely from different worlds, and mids finally had the presence and resolution I wanted.

I know that different driver types could be coherent and be better integrated with each other (a great example is the Spatial Audio X3), but I don't think it's fair to expect that at the BMR price point.

WHat's the MTM design you ended up going with.

I am leaning towards the Purezza on the bookshelves front. But still looking at the Zaph ZRT 2/2.5 way in a sealed configuration as an interim while we work out the PAP open baffle design.

ALso happened to find out that Selah AUdio is working on a dual purifi woofer 3 way design.

    upload_2021-2-16_10-3-31.png

I'd expect this new design to be in the 2.5k if not 3k range when he is done for the kit.

But i'll also say.. 3 way designs are always harder to pull off.

Crossovers get complex. Driver integration is harder. And trying to pull it off on a tight budget is very hard unless you go an active XO route, which is what my first ever DIY project was.

I've always found simple first order XO 2 way designs to be elegant and sound amazing.

@dBel84 you know.. i've been doing some reading tonight and i am intrigued by the LxMini.

THe place i have in mind for the speakers is a good 10 feet from the back wall and can have about 2-3 feet from either side walls and have about 9-10 feet between the speakers.

Thinking of ordering the kit from Madisound with the miniDSP 4x10 HD and build a set of sealed 12inch subs.

Am curious as to how they would perform with hip hop, electronica and dance music though. Bunch of youtube videos are mostly esoteric audiophiley music :p

That's actually a different speaker called the Pluto. It had an all analog active crossover. Since then he's preferred a digital implementation with his LXMini. However Nelson Pass did develop an analog XO for the LXMini that is available at DIYAudio

This is perfect for PAP Trio 15s. Although you won’t need to pull them out that far from the wall. If you like Magneplanars I’d build the PAPs and you could do it pretty cheaply using Eminence Beta 15s and Tang Bands with the Xover spec’d in the PAP thread.

You might want to also consider the version with the Heil ESS tweeter. It will give you the top end extension similar to a Maggie ribbon tweeter. But it will require a different Xover, the Leonidas version won’t work. I love mine and with an Aegir amp it’s sweet and all the power you’ll ever need.

AS i understand it, the original leonidos 2 XO design is meant for the Eminence NEO 2 woofers specifically made for PAP that aren't available anymore right?

And it is with the ang Band W8-1808 full range driver?

The alternative for the NEO 2 woofers would be Eminence Beta 15 that you mentioned or these 12 " SB Acoustics that Don pointed me to.
