I'd say they are about on par with the FSPs in technicalities. Tonally more similar than different, both V-shaped somewhat. FSP is a bit more sizzle, DT177X is more sharp. FSP is more midbass (although plenty of extension). DT177X is more rumble. FSP was uncomfortable for me though (big head).

Does the f'ing headband crack if you don't have a baby sized head?

Focal Spirit Pro first batch had the headband issue but they assure that after the first batch, they fixed the cracking headband. Anyhow, I haven’t used mine in a long time but I like the sound and agree with @purr1n on sonic comparison.

For comfort? Totally Beyer FTW. With the FSP, I learned to make sure that I put the pad tension on the corner of my jaw. Otherwise, the clamp gives me a tension headache over time. Fine as long as position is correct.

Both good headphones but the Beyers can be tuned with pads, are more comfy (but bigger), and yes...can rumble without being Philips X1 boomy.

Didn't the Beyer 1770 pro also have headband issues when it first was released?

Shipped @purr1n three pad types to measure. Should be there tomorrow.

Type 1 is the XL Lambskin non-perforated.

Type 2 is another lambskin pad with a smaller circular ear hole, but deeper.

I call these 'barrel pads'. Super W-shaped on my Fostexes. On my TH's they have less of a singular treble peak than the XL pads but more ups and downs. Colored and crispy. Curious if we'll see the same thing here. I love the look of them, but the sound is hit or miss depending on the headphone. Kinda goofy cartoonish booming fun with EDM.

Type 3 is a PU leather pad with an oval earhole and basically zero depth. I use the sheepskin version of this pad sometimes with my Fostexes. PU is a bit more forward on the top half than sheepskin. These 'pancake pads' generally have the smoothest treble with the TH's. Or at least the sheepskin ones do, I didn't measure the PU because subjectively I just didn't like them as much.

I'll update with an aliexpress link if there's interest after measures.

I was hoping for a sound similar to the XL perforated pads but with more bass, thus resulting in a mild W-shaped FR a la TH-X00. This didn't happen. From looking that the measured FR, I thought these pads might be a better candidate than the stock pads for a more even smoother sound. This wasn't the case either.

The DT177X with these pads does sound smoother, but they have rather dark tilt with muddy lows. Subjectively, it sounds like there is more bass than what the measurements indicate. However, this could be a combination of additional factors that include a deeper recession around 3kHz and flatter less sharp highs which don't balance the elevated bass.

If I may ask @purr1n, which pad you recommend if you wanna say f**k it and give me da bass? From reading the posts here, it appears the lambskinish one that came with the can is the best bet.

The stock lambskin one seems to be the choice right now for a gimme the bass in a good way that meshes with the rest. I have two more pads to assess.

Any chance we can see the inside of the cups / rear of the driver?

Lambskin pad with a smaller circular ear hole, but deeper. There are similar to the stock, except slightly deeper.

OK, these are really like! Measurements below are too close to call, but I do think they are reflective of what I am hearing. I'm getting a bit more clarity and less thickness with these. Less laid back with smoother highs.

Measurements are very dependent upon getting consistency with the pads. Let me fluff the pads and take another measurement with CSDs because I think it's worth to consider them and also see why I like these better. @E_Schaaf: What kinds of pads are these and where do we get them?

I have no idea how to disassemble them. They seem slightly different from the classic Beyers with the ring that can be popped.

These are measurements of the "deep" lambskin pads using the flat plate coupler. Some similarities with the MiniDSP EARs FR results: slightly less mid-bass to lower-mids and mid-treble.

They're pretty much the same, the ring just has the extra lip for holding the stock pads. There should be notches in the ring that correspond to where the clips are (they hook outward towards the edge of the cup).

Final one, the "Fostex" pads. There are probably my favorite, less basshead, less sharp in the highs. The downside is that the Fostex pads will be uncomfortable for those with bigger ears.

Minor correction - those pads aren't made by Fostex or sold on any Fostex headphones. I just use them on some modded Fostexes personally. The THX00 pads would be easy to confuse with these as both have a similar ear cavity shape, but the X00 pads hole is not centered on the pad - it's slightly offset forward and held in place by rigid plastic. Also, the X00 pads have stiffer leather and firmer foam, they aren't as comfy and don't seal remotely as well.

For even smoother top-end, I suggest the sheepskin version. I've ordered a few batches of those and they always come out a little different - some are equipped with heavy open-cell front foam damper (about 2x as dense as HD6xx front foam), which is best removed unless you don't mind killing off some dynamics and upper mids. I use mine with the hairscreens entirely cut out. This would be a very interesting pad to use with the ZMF closed backs for those who want fuller lower mids, more linear bass, and less mid-treble.

    Here they are - https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000908353669.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.266d4c4dZO8zuO

To avoid quality gambling, the original earpads can be bought directly from German Maestro: https://www.german-maestro-shop.de/.../Shops/61902279/Products/"Ohrpolster 41-6086"

These earpads are shallower than most truly circumaural earpads. They're useful to smooth out the treble, but on the wrong headphones they will make the sound too dark and 'in-your-face'.

Thanks to the GF and all those Amex MR Points I need to burn before I'm closing those cards down, I proceeded in ordering the DT 177X. However, I'm still confused on how to swap the pads out. I know @purr1n is showing something about replacing that outter ring/notch thingy. And some said you only need to worry about it if using the velour pads. I'm confused, is there a weird instructions in swapping out the pads?

End of the day, I just need a basic Closed Back for slightly bass heavy music/casual listening. I believe this will be my ticket.
