Any recommendations? There's an infinite number of them out there and many appear to be no longer supported or are user-unfriendly or unwieldy.

If you think you've got a winner, please share.

    HiFoo by Br3tt.

I've been using it for years now, problem free. It takes a little to set up properly, so read the installation notes. Once you get it running, it's fantastic and has every option I could possibly want.

Do you know whether it can separate albums based on file location? E.g. If I have an album folder labeled "MP3" within a folder of FLAC files, will it show the albums separately or repeat each track listing?

I think that would depend on how you set up your tags. If you assigned them a different album name such as:

Album Name - MP3 and Album Name - FLAC, then it would have them show up as two separate albums.

Or, you could set up two separate playlists. One that is assigned to your MP3 folder and another that is assigned to your FLAC folders.

Or, if you WANT them to be merged together you could do that, too.

    It's flexible.

Personally, I have an mp3 folder and a flac folder. For foobar, I only have it scan the flac folder for my music library.

@Chris1967 I'm giving Dark One a go, after I couldn't get HiFoo or a couple others to work correctly. Learning the ins and outs still, but liking it so far

I use my own modification of fooayian 1.1

Not the most 'practical' skin but I like the simplicity and I use aero snap (double click the bottom edge of the window) to expand the window top to bottom to reveal the playlist/library.

Athough this is not foobar, but I think this mode is really cool:

    Lyrics is autopulled from internet:

What issues did you have? Trouble installing the fonts and characters?

It would crash whenever I would try to open it. I'm sure I probably did something wrong setting it all up, but I ended up getting a couple other skins working, and have settled on Dark One 4.0 as suggested by @Chris1967

FWIW I gave MusicBee a shot for the last couple days, and I actually liked it, if that's where I would have started way back when instead of Foobar I probably would've stayed. Full featured yet simple and skins and plugins are all there from the beginning
