I found that weird. There is a dip at 3.8KHz, but also a ridge/ringing. Weird.

Will keep these CSD presentations for sure. V2 setup but with V1 style presentations which were superior. I was too lazy to recode my program for the V2 ARTA data until recently. Having lots of people help out with the loaner program, assist with measurements, help moderate the site, and not having to worry about the means to pay for its continued operation do relieve a lot of stress where I can focus on more important things.

Yes, the X00 CSD looks darn clean, especially for a closed headphone with internal cup cavity. Compared it to HD650 last night on the Schiit stack. This is a resolving headphone. Look how clean the crucial 5kHz to 10kHz region is when the CSD floor is lowered to -45db:

Lowered even more to -54db. Now we starts to see hints of the floor. Added Sony as well. The Z7 is pretty resolving of low level information as well. However it has more non-linear distortion and less smooth frequency response.

Looks really nice, would love to compare them to the Vibro.

On the subject of this kind of chart, can anyone link me to a description of how to interpret this? Looks like a powerful visualization, but I'm not sure what I'm looking at, what to take from it.

Scrubbing slowly through frequency sweeps to detect the peaks and dips. This is to my ears (we all have unique levels of hearing loss/sensitivity, and I have tinnitus so treble burns my soul).
    • There's a peak around 2.3kHz
    • There's a peak that starts around 4.5kHz and ends around 5.5kHz
    • There's another peak that starts around 9kHz and ends around 11kHz
Interestingly, as I type that, I notice that the peaks are multiples of each other.

What does that mean? Harmonic ringing? Is that a thing? Those are actually not my tinnitus frequencies (usually B8 @ 7.9 and B9 @ 15.8kHz) or I'd consider that a potential culprit.

I would be bad if FR or CSD, but with ears I don't think it would be mean much because ears are not precision instruments. Ears are poorly suited to hearing peaks with sweeps as our response to tones isn't flat and varies at different volumes. Unless of course during your your regular course of music listening, it hurts your ears or your ears become fatigued, then your ears are probably right.

Sweeps are weird. Better to use pink noise to pick out peaks in response. Listen for "chhhhh" "shhhhh" "tsssss" etc. and learn to correlate to each band respectively.

Not sure if it was said, but some props to Jude for facilitating the contact between Massdrop and Fostex. Not to say it couldn't have been done, just that the relationship was fostered much quicker with the introduction.

Okay, back to the emperor hating...

I'll try that out in the next couple days.

The sweeps yielded a very obvious volume increase at the noted frequencies. Not a subtle 1-2dB, more like 5-6.

I also got a little fatigue listening at high volumes--notably more than from the HD650 or HA-DX2000.

As mentioned before, I am more sensitive than most to treble, possibly because of my tinnitus.

    Also worth mentioning:

I tried these with Audeze and Brainwavz pads and those peaks went away while new, more significant peaks were introduced higher up.

I ordered some high impact styrene and high density foam to try some mods to see if I can get it back closer to stock sound with the bigger pads.

I have a pair of alpha pads laying around with no current purpose in their sad lives, if that's something that needs to happen
