Looking for help buying my "first" car. Price is not really an issue to a certain point, more focused that it has to be "cheap" to own and maybe can sell with minimal loss. Mostly looking at small somewhat sporty cars. Out for sale right now:

    MINI Cooper 2007 - 64 000 km - 120 BHP - Manual - FWD - 12.000$

    Alfa Romeo Brera 2007 - 130 000 km - 200 BHP - Manual - FWD - 22.000$

    Volkswagen Golf R32 2003 - 79 000 km - 241 BHP - Manual - AWD - 37.000$

    BMW M3 E46 2002 - 80 000 km - 343 BHP - Manual - RWD - 41.000$

    Toyota GT86 2014 - 19 000 km - 200 BHP - Manual - RWD - 41.000$

    Audi A5 Coupe 2011 - 94 000 km - 240 BHP - Manual - AWD - 41.000$

    Audi TT MK2 2012 - 80 000 km - 272 BHP - Manual - AWD - 47.000$

    BMW 2 Series Coupe - 11 000 km - 184 BHP - Auto - RWD - 49.000$

    Porsche Cayman 2010 - 51 000 km - 211 BHP - Auto - RWD - 52.000$

    Audi S5 Coupe 2010 - 94 000 km - 354 BHP - Manual - AWD - 54.000$

    Audi TT MK3 2015 - 31 000 km - 230 BHP - Manual - AWD - 58.000$

    Porsche 911 (977) 2005 - 67 000 km - 325 BHP - Manual - RWD - 61.000$

Wow , an impressive list but many will SERIOUSLY FAIL your cheap to own requirement.
I think I would add Subraru BRZ to the list along with Mazda MX-5.

My picks of your list are in red. Good luck, does not suck to be you :D

My 1999 Honda Civic is on it's last legs with 215K and rusting out from the salted roads in our MN winters. I'm doing some research on-line and am quite overwhelmed. I hate buying cars. I haven't been a car enthusiast since I could actually access the oil filter to change oil in my '77 and '81 Volvo 240. I was broke when i owned these, but they ran forever and were cheap and easy to fix since there was a SAAB/Volvo graveyard nearby that I would get cheap/used parts from.

My new car will primarily be used as a 30mi round trip commuter for myself and general family go-getter. My wife told me to buy what I want, within financial reason. I want something reliable and hope to last me a minimum of 150K with minimum repairs other than routine maintenance.

We test drove a Subaru Legacy and Forester today. I liked both and like the boxer engine concept. Decent ground clearance so I'm not jacking the front bumper when parking up to a curb. Replacing the plugs looks like a little more work than your standard V or Inline, but liked the fact that there was some space inside and accessing the oil filter doesn't get any easier (holy f**k, it's a nightmare to replace something as trivial as lamps in my Mazda5, much less the oil). Both get acceptable gas mileage, and of course AWD would be a bonus for our snowy winters.

My in-laws have a new Honda Accord and this is high on my list. I drove it once to the liquor store but have plans to do some more serious driving this weekend and have a peak under the hood. Another Civic is an option, but would prefer a skosh more space with two tit suckers to haul around.

I need helpful guidance from Friends and Pirates, especially all things related to Subaru since I've never owned one. What are the common problems with Subarus and repairs etc...

    OXOXOX

    @TMoney

Unless I'm mistaken that's a 991 Carrera 4S (pre 2016 facelift). Which incidentally makes it the last naturally aspirated Carrera which Porsche made. Probably. Which is pretty sweet. If it happens to be a manual you get bonus points, but PDK is ok too. :p

So I nabbed a new 2017 Legacy 2.5i Premium. I'm pretty chuffed with her so far. I had a hard time deciding between an Impreza, Legacy, and Forester. I went with the safe middle of the road option. Huge booty, plenty of space for a family of four, and a nice sized 18.5gal petrol tank.

The CVT feels a little odd at times coming from a multi-geared automatic or manual tranny, but I don't care, I'm getting 33mpg to and from work with an AWD drive train. I'm not a lead foot, but like to have some acceleration when needed in city/highway traffic. It's no rotary engine, but acceptable once you get the speed above 30mph or so. i haven't played around with the 'manual' paddle shifters yet.

The idea of power locks, doors, seats, much less having a touchscreen computer/head-unit never appealed to me. I have to say I'm digging these small silly luxuries. The Starlink infotainment, bluetooth, XM, and My Subaru app are pretty cool. I can't wait until snow flies to try out the heated seats, heated side mirrors, heated wipers, and of course, the AWD. I think I'll become bored with XM within the 4mo free trial offer, preferring to stream Spotify from my phone. I love the hands-free bluetooth and voice activated assistant for calls and texting. I'm able to dial in the the seat and steering wheel for the ultimate cockpit comfort. I also love the auto-dimming rear view mirror to block the high riding head lamps of assholes who drive pick-ups with lift kits and KC lights. I don't mean to sound like a rube, but coming from a 1999 Civic and a bare bones 2010 Mazda 5, this is pretty cool shit for a guy that prides himself on being practical and thrifty. Guilty pleasures were verboten in my childhood. I can can rationalize it as 'safety' features.

I've always been intrigued with the boxer engine. I love the throaty purr and growl in this car. I wish it purred louder. Changing the spark plugs will take more effort than your typical in-line or V, but the oil filter practically pokes you in the eye when you open the hood, and there's a ton on space above the low slung cylinder heads to perform basic repairs. Under the hood looks pretty f'ing cool, especially the serpentine and pulleys.

I just need to come up with a nickname for her now.

Just bought a 50Amp level2 charger...my typical charge time just went from 12hrs to 2 hours (you pretty much need two nights to charge it from dead  out of 110v). 6AWG wire is no joke and the wire to the car is the same size as a unleaded gas station hose...i bet that'll make a nice audiophile power cable. Now i just need to milk that tax credit and get my money back. This should hold me off until i can afford a P100D or an i8.

[IMG]Donated the Pride Ride today to a non-profit that provides tuition-free auto mechanics education for disadvantaged high school grads. I'm going to miss her.

The clear duct tape job on the driver side rear tail light hole lasted more than 10 years without any peel back. You just need to cut to size, use 2 layers of differing circumference, warm it up in the microwave, and press into place. Rounded corners with the duct tape is key.

I bought it with 40K or so on the odometer 13 years ago, maybe $1200 in repairs other than one DIY brake job, and donated it with 217K on the odometer.

    Long live the Pride Ride.
