so i was tinkering around with the idea of having an all analog setup, and i came across this thing. (http://www.gramovox.com/pages/floating-record)

i know i should really be looking at something like a VPI with proper phono preamps & cartridges, but the look of this intrigues me. Do you guys think this thing would be decent? terrible? Do you guys think its something with some changes to the cartridges and possibly some mods it can be even fairly good?

I just dig the way it looks and would be a cool setup that doesnt take up much desk space. Maybe its because I'm one of those artsy fartsy designers lol. Anyhow, would love to get you guys' thoughts on this.

I'm not an expert on turntables, but I would be skeptical of a company that only makes this vertical record player and a bluetooth gramophones. Feel free to be the guinea pig that tries this out and report back though.

I think there would be several recommendations (U-turn, Pro Ject, Rega) that would give you better sound quality for the money.

I don't think it is actually floating. If you scroll down, there is an arm in back.

If you want something that looks cool, go for it. But if you're after that SQ that everyone is so exceited about you're not likely to get it from that floating rig.

One of my turntables is, to a certain degree, a sacrifice of performance for art. It's a transcriptor hydraulic reference. I don't have a photo of mine handy, but the photo below is more or less it. With careful set up it is pretty capable, but for less money better SQ is easily attained.

wow that thing is super sick~ lol. yeah i know im a sucker for cool / artistic looking things. Im tempted to get one to try it out, but i guess I would have to have a point of reference to see if its any good? Im thinking either buying the gramovox (more expensive but coool looking lol) or the Uturn orbit plus (still cool looking but maybe just not as cool, slightly cheaper) that purrin recommends.

The last time i used vinyl was on my cheap direct belt stanton turntable which kinda sucked in sound quality (this was like 15 years ago when i was starting out as a music producer trying to sample records lol), so im not sure how i would really know if the sound quality is up to par.

I'm thinking that i would compare it to my digital stack? would a U-turn orbit plus sound better than my current digital stack? (right now its a Schiit wyrd >> melodious mx u8 >> Theta digital Progeny >> Mjolnir | Vali 2).

If so and this gramovox thing sounds worse than my digital stack then i dont its not good enough? lol. The whole point of me getting all analog is really to have better sound~ (plus it looks cool? lol) I guess if i buy this thing i would be the first on this forum to report back? Maybe in the near future if theres a meet i can bring it for comparison if it doesnt suck too much? lol

[edit. i just realized that this will take 8-10 weeks to be delivered since they just finished up their kickstarter campaign. looks like i'll just wait till later~ maybe pick up the orbit plus first instead]

Purrin recommended a line of entry level turntables that looked pretty slick in another thread. Not quite as artsy as this one, but nice and clean.

Hey Noodlz, I just got back into vinyl recently, but I went the vintage route. I bought shaizada's Micro-Seiki B21, Graham Robin Tonarm and AT-OC09ML/II cart. It has a cool 70's look of it's own, nice wood, similar vibe to the gramavox, just not as modern or vertical (obviously), and I'm sure a lot better sounding. I'd be surprised if that thing sounded real good, but it is very handsome I have to say. I saw a beautiful turntable at a demo recently:
    624df81a6a-PearAudioBlue©PeterUhan_0-2-1024x673.jpg
Pear Audio. Similar vibe (if horizontal:D), much more expensive, and it looks much sexier in real life than this pic, not as heavy looking in rl as this pic Note to Pear, get better pics for your website, they don't do these beauties justice.

Will it be better than your digital stack? I went back to vinyl because I was looking for "better" than my digital stack and I'm coming to the conclusion that it's comparing apples and oranges and I can't really judge one against the other in that broad a term. Different, certainly. There are aspects that are better in digital, and aspects better in analogue. Certainly, overall, I prefer the analog because it "feels" more organic to me. I suspect our brains process reproduced sound from different sources in different ways and it's mostly unconscious, so it's not possible to "understand" what the differences are. I can make up all kinds of explanations that might sound plausible, like analogue is continuous and digital is like audio pixels, or some bullshit like that. But I can say that they are different and that my whole being is a bit more relaxed when I listen to a great analogue source than when I listen to a great digital source. Of course, I haven't heard the best, so, there you go...

Now, can someone please come over to my house and help me figure out how to treat my living room so my system is listenable??????:mad::mad:

yep yep you're probably right its kinda different. I guess i will wait and see till this thing becomes more readily available and possibly report back here if i buy it =P That pear audio thing looks super sexy, but the lack of a prices scares me as to how expensive it is lol
